This method utilizes a conventional atomic force microscope tip, coated with a magnetic material precursor solution, to generate patterns that can be post-treated at elevated temperature to generate magnetic features consisting of barium ferrite in its hexagonal magnetoplumbite (M-type) structure. Features ranging from several hundred nm down to below 100 nm were generated and studied using AFM, magnetic force microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The approach offers a new way for patterning functional inorganic magnetic nanostructures with deliberate control over feature size and shape, as well as interfeature distance and location.

Polyurethane polyether-based elastomers are described which are thermoplastic, recyclable and have increased high temperature resistance which permits fabrication by injection molding. The elastomers are the product of reaction of 4,4'-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate), a particular group of polypropylene oxide-polyethylene oxide block copolymers and an extender [straight chain aliphatic diols C 2-6 or the bis(2-hydroxyethyl ether) of hydroquinone or resorcinol]. The block copolymers have at least 50 percent primary hydroxyl groups, a pH in the range of 4.5 to 9, a content of alkali metal ion less than 25 ppm and a molecular weight of 1000 to 3000. The minimum ethylene oxide (E.O.) residue content (percent by weight) of the polyether for any molecular weight (M.W.) is governed by the equation: ##EQU1## In a particularly preferred embodiment the elastomers are prepared by replacing up to 25 percent by equivalents of the extender by certain diols (polyethylene glycols up to 1500 M.W. preferred).

ABSTRACT A novel process for preparing a diaphragm-deposited activated cathode for use in a chlor-alkali cell is disclosed; the process involves placing an activated cathode in a slurry of fibrous material and depositing a uniform mixture of the fibrous material onto the cathode by means of a vacuum; most importantly, the invention involves heat-treating the activated cathode in an inert atmosphere, such as a nitrogen atmosphere or a reducing atmosphere, such as a hydrogen atmosphere, during the baking or sintering of the diaphragm; diaphragm-deposited activated cathodes prepared according to this invention exhibit better adhesion and stability than those which are prepared using conventional techniques; this, in turn, permits sustained operation in a chlor-alkali cell at a lower voltage for substantial energy savings.

An etchant including a halogenated salt, such as Cryolite (Na 3 AlF 6 ) or potassium tetrafluoro borate (KBF 4 ), is provided. A method of wet etching may include contacting an etchant to at least one surface of a support layer of a multi-layer laminate, wherein the support layer may include aluminum oxide; or contacting an etchant to at least one surface of a support layer of a multi-layer laminate, wherein the etchant may include Cryolite (Na 3 AlF 6 ), potassium tetrafluoro borate (KBF 4 ), or both; and etching at least a portion of the support layer. The method may provide a laminate produced by growing a crystal onto an aluminum oxide support layer, and chemically removing at least a portion of the support layer by wet etch. An electronic device, optical device or combined device including the laminate is provided.
