A mask for and method of masking a workpiece which has some predetermined continuous demarcation zone whereby precise painting of a first area disposed on one side of the zone is accommodated. The mask includes opposed faces and a peripheral edge or contour having substantially the same conformation as the demarcation zone. One face includes a narrow band of adhesive extending therearound adjacent the peripheral edge. The mask is accurately positioned on the workpiece to precisely mask a second area thereof along and on the other side of the demarcation zone from the workpiece first area. The first area may then be painted and the mask thereafter removed. To accommodate application in production environments, the other or outer face of the mask may be release coated so that a stack or pad comprised of a plurality of identical masks may be provided at a workstation for individual application to consecutive workpieces. When such a pad is generated, a plurality of mask layers are first prepared so as to have an adhesive band of the desired conformation on the one face thereof. Thereafter, the plurality of layers are placed in a stacked relationship to each other and then die cut to have a predetermined peripheral edge or contour. The subject mask and method are advantageously useable with any number of painting applications having regular and/or irregular demarcation zone conformations.

The dispenser includes a tape roll mounting assembly and a guide roller-engaging surface assembly for separating the release strip section from the adhesive layer during a tape dispensing operation. The tape roll mounting assembly includes a hub rotatably mounted to a frame by an axle and retained by a retaining nut. A coil spring received over the axle is interposed between the retaining nut and the outer side face of the hub. A brake pad is operatively interposed between the other hub side face and the frame. The forward end of the tape is threaded through the guide roller-engaging surface assembly so that as tape is unrolled from the roll and withdrawn from the dispenser, the release strip section is continuously separated or removed from the tape adhesive layer to expose that portion of the adhesive layer disposed therebeneath. Tape backlash is prevented by adjusting the coil spring compression by means of the retaining nut. Tape dispensed from the device may be advantageously used for marking some workpiece prior to painting. Also, the device may be operatively mounted adjacent a supply of masking paper so that the tape is in general alignment with a lateral side edge of the paper. This then facilitates mating and simultaneous dispensing of the tape and paper.

By including fibers meeting these characteristics, the present invention composite material exhibits improved maximum flexural stiffness at reduced basis weight compared to a comparative composite material comprising a fiber reinforced thermoplastic core differing from the composite material only in that the fiber reinforced thermoplastic core of the comparative composite material does not contain fibers meeting the content, diameter and length conditions of the fibers in the thermoplastic core of the composite material.

When this rate drops below a first particular rate, indicating that substantially all particles greater than that size have settled below this particular height in the beaker, control circuitry is actuated to enable the fluid to enter into the first tube via the aperture therein for analyzing particles received therein via Coulter type detectors. Control circuitry may also be initiated to allow fluid to enter the third tube through its aperture for analyzing the particles received therein via Coulter type detectors.

A failed bearing indicator for detecting and indicating an overheated axle journal in a railcar axle bearing. In a preferred embodiment the failed bearing indicator is characterized by an elongated connector chain terminated on each end by a T-shaped connector bracket. Each of the connector brackets is typically bolted to a common pedestal adaptor which is mounted on each corresponding axle bearing of the railcar, and one of the fastening bolts is constructed of a heat-resistant material and the other fastening bolt is constructed of a heat-sensitive material. In the event that the axle bearing overheats during travel of the railcar on the railroad, the heat-sensitive bolt melts and releases the corresponding connector bracket from the pedestal adaptor, while the other connector bracket, secured by the heat-resistant bolt, remains attached to the pedestal adaptor. The released connector bracket, suspended from the connector chain, strikes and activates a typically conventional dragging equipment sensor adjacent to the railroad, to alert railroad personnel to the overheated bearing before complete failure of the bearing. In another embodiment a rectangular offset bend connector plate is provided on each end of the connector chain in place of the connector brackets, to facilitate attachment of the connector chain to the pedestal adaptor. In still another embodiment, the connector brackets or offset bend connector plates are provided on opposite ends of an elongated, flexible connector cable instead of the connector chain.

In some forms, the locking mechanism is a self-locking mechanism that automatically self-locks when in the first position. The locking mechanism may be particularly suited for use with a backrest or with lateral supports for a chair, such as a wheelchair.
