The level of the reference waves may be varied, as shown the blocking circuit K is controlled by a zero level detector D2 and the summing is effected by emitter followers or operational amplifiers.

A fuel injection pump 1 is mounted on the casing 5 of an internal combustion engine by seating the curved base 2 of the pump in a corresponding socket 3 in a bracket 4 and tightening bolts 8 screwed into holes in the bracket 4 so that the heads 9 of the bolts bear on productions 7 on the pump 1 to urge a further projection 11 on the opposite side of the pump upwards into engagement with an abutment 12 on the engine casing 5. The centre of curvature of the base 2 and socket 3 coincides with the centre 6 of the pump cam shaft mounting so that angular adjustment of the pump 1 in its socket 3 does not alter the position of the cam shaft. The socket 3 may be prism shaped instead of smoothly curved. Instead of being integral with the engine casing 5, the bracket 4 and abutment 12 may be integral with each other and bolted to the casing 5. The projection 11 may be bolted to the pump casing. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), an adjusting screw (13) may be disposed between the facing surfaces of projection 11 and abutment 12, the screw being screwed into one or other of the surfaces and abutting the other surface. A locknut (14) is provided. In a further modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the abutment on the engine casing side of the pump 1 is formed by a cylindrical pin (15) rotatably supported in a bore (16) in the engine casing 5 extending normal to the plane 18. The pin (15) has a head with one or more bearing surfaces (17) which abut the projection 11 on the pump casing. The pin (15) may alternatively be mounted in a bore in the pump casing to abut the engine casing 5.

The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for processing a metallic gear (20) comprising providing a gear (20), directing a first peening media at the metallic gear (20) thereby exposing a plurality of surfaces on the metallic gear (20) to the first peening media whereby the strength and wear properties of the teeth roots of the gear (20) are enhanced, directing a second peening media at the metallic gear (20) thereby exposing a plurality of surfaces on the metallic gear (20) to the second peening media whereby the surface compressive stress of the gear (20) is enhanced, providing a container (200), placing a fine finishing medium (212) in the container (200), placing the gear (201) with the fine finishing medium (212) in the container (200), coupling vibrations to the container (200) to vibrate the fine finishing medium (212) with the wetted gear (20), removing the gear (20) from the container (200), washing the gear (201) and rinsing the gear (20) with rust inhibitor.
