A sensory array detects objects in an environment surrounding the user, such as a fireman or blind person, when the device is being worn, a tactile display to physically engage the user's body and to provide salient information about said environment. An algorithm controls one or both of the sensory array and tactile display so that the presentation of an object is adapted to circumstances other than the physical parameter of the object's proximity to the user. The output can therefore be tuned to provide salient feedback, based on the rate of change of position of the object with respect to the user, the physical attributes of the object, the time since first detection of the object by the electromagnetic or sonic sensory array; and/or the current situation or objectives of the user. This ensures that the user does not get too many distracting tactile responses for the user to understand their environment from vibrotactile stimulation of the skin.

User devices, methods, and computer-readable media are described for providing source-of-sound based navigation to a visually-impaired user. A sound detected at a user device of a visually-impaired user is categorized and an approximate location of a source of the sound is determined. A contextual analysis is performed based on the determined sound category such that the results of the contextual analysis indicate whether the visually-impaired user should be directed towards or away from the location of the sound source. An evacuation path is determined in those scenarios in which the user should be directed away from the detected sound and a tactile representation of the evacuation path is generated on a display of the visually-impaired user's device. A navigation path is determined in those scenarios in which the user should be directed towards the detected sound and a corresponding tactile representation thereof is generated. 1. A computer-implemented method for providing source-of-sound based navigation , the method comprising:detecting, at a user device, a sound in an environment;determining a location of a source of the sound;identifying a sound category of the sound;performing, based at least in part on the sound category, a contextual analysis of the sound;determining, based at least in part on the contextual analysis of the sound, that a visually-impaired user of the user device should be directed away from the location of the source of the sound;determining an evacuation path for directing the visually-impaired user away from the source of the sound; andgenerating, on a display of the user device, a tactile representation of the evacuation path.2. RETINAL-INSPIRED METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR IMPROVED DETECTION

The present disclosure provides a method and device for filtering sensor data. Signals from an array of sensor pixels are received and checked for changes in pixel values. Motion is detected based on the changes in pixel values, and motion output signals are transmitted to a processing station. If the sum of correlated changes in pixel values across a predetermined field of view exceeds a predetermined value, indicating sensor jitter, the motion output signals are suppressed. If a sum of motion values within a defined subsection of the field of view exceeds a predetermined threshold, indicating the presence of a large object of no interest, the motion output signals are suppressed for that subsection. 1. A sensor data filtering device , comprising:a first layer configured to receive signals from an array of sensor pixels and determine changes in pixel values;a second layer configured to receive the changes in pixel values from the first layer, detect motion based on the changes in pixel values and transmit motion output signals to a processing station;a third layer configured to receive the changes in pixel values from the first layer and detect correlated changes in pixel values across a predetermined field of view, wherein the third layer is configured to modify the motion output signals of the second layer if a sum of correlated changes in pixel values within the field of view exceeds a predetermined threshold; anda fourth layer configured to receive motion output signals from the second layer and integrate motion values within defined subsections of the field of view, wherein the fourth layer is configured to modify the motion output signals of the second layer for a subsection if a sum of motion values within that subsection exceeds a predetermined threshold.2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the device is incorporated into a remote sensor.3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein the remote sensor is selected from among the following:a camera;an ...
