X-ray contrast agents are provided in the form of tablets having a shaped core of a water-insoluble, powdery inorganic X-ray contrast substance and at least one binding agent, the core being coated with a layer of a basic foodstuff which is insoluble in water and does not swell or only swells slowly, and which is decomposed only in the presence of the corresponding enzymes. The X-ray contrast substance may be bismuth silicate, barium silicate, silver iodide, barium sulphate or thorium oxide. The binding agent may be starch, sugar, pectin, gum arabic. The core may be isolated from the foodstuff layer by a soluble or easily decomposable layer, e.g. of sugar, pectin, milk sugar, dextrose, fruit sugar, mannite, water-soluble methyl cellulose, gum arabic, polyvinyl-pyrrolidone. The foodstuff layer may be finally coated with a protective layer of sugar, milk sugar, dextrose, fruit sugar, pectin, starch sugar, &c.
