Aqueous film forming firefighting composition concentrates are provided that contain an effective amount of a monomelic zwitterionic or anionic Cperfluoroalkyl surfactant having a molecule weight less than 800 daltons. The compositions also contain an effective amount of a foam stabilizing agent, and an effective amount of at least one non-fluorinated surfactant. The composition has less than 0.8% F, and is substantially free of any surfactant containing a perfluoroalkyl group containing more than 6 carbon atoms. The composition meets Military Specification MIL-F-24385F. 1. Disclosed herein are fire-fighting compositions, and methods thereof, comprising a surfactant and a fraction of a fermentation mixture comprised of yeast exoproteins, where the proteins enhance ability of water to extinguish Class A, Class B and Class K fires, as defined by the National Fire Protection Association. In one embodiment the surfactant is optimized to wet and penetrate into the substrate, for example wood, as in a Class A fire. In a second embodiment, the surfactant is optimized for foaming to provide fire fighting protection in a Class B fire. Further embodiments include methods for using the same protein-surfactant fire fighting composition for both polar (e.g., alcohol) and non-polar combustible liquids. In yet another embodiment, methods are described where the proteins comprise stress shock proteins and where the residual protein-surfactant combination that is not degraded from the fire acts to stimulate resident bacterial populations to accelerate the biodegradation of residual hydrocarbons and surfactants from the composition. In another embodiment, the compositions are free of solvents, fluorine-free as in fluoro surfactants and fluoro-polymers. 1. A fire fighting composition comprising a surfactant and a yeast exo-protein derived from yeast fermentation , wherein the composition accelerates the extinguishing of a fire.2. The characteristic wettability of the AFFF foams also allows the foam to slide on the surface of the burning liquid, such that even positions are attained onto which the extinguishing foam cannot be applied directly. The present invention provides a method for preventing and extinguishing fire, the method for preventing and extinguishing fire being effective against fire caused by a pyrophoric material and a water prohibitive substance. The method for preventing and extinguishing fire of the present invention is characterized in that a fire extinguishing foam composition is supplied to a flame caused by the combustion of a pyrophoric material and a water prohibitive substance whereby the flame is suppressed or extinguished, and that a combustible material is changed to an inert substance by a hydration reaction, the combustible material being a pyrophoric material or a water prohibitive substance. 1. Aqueous firefighting composition concentrates are provided that contain an effective amount of a high molecular weight water soluble anionic acrylic polymer, an effective amount of at least one high molecular weight polysaccharide gum; and an effective amount of at least one surfactant. In the present context, a high molecular weight water-soluble anionic acrylic polymer is a polymer with an average molecular weight M w of at least one million (1000 kDa). The combination of the acrylic polymer and the gum provide a concentrate that generates foam with highly desirable firefighting properties, including high foam expansion ratio, long burnback time, and slow drainage time while avoiding problems with previous gum-containing foam concentrates, such as high viscosity and component separation upon storage.

It has been discovered that low molecular weight poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG) can be used in place of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DGME) in fire foam concentrates without compromising the desirable properties provided by DGME. Surprisingly it has been found that lower molecular weight PEG with a weight average molecular weight Mof 400 or less provides comparable performance to DGME with considerably lower toxicity. Use of this PEG permits preparation of fire foam concentrates that exclude DGME completely and that are less toxic than conventional DGME-containing concentrates. 1. An aqueous firefighting foam concentrate comprising:(a) at least one fluorinated surfactant and(b) poly(ethyleneglycol) having a weight average molecular weight of about 400 or less, wherein said concentrate is free of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether.2. It has been discovered that low molecular weight poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG) can be used in place of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether (DGME) in fire foam concentrates without compromising the desirable properties provided by DGME. Surprisingly it has been found that lower molecular weight PEG with a weight average molecular weight Mw of 400 or less provides comparable performance to DGME with considerably lower toxicity. Use of this PEG permits preparation of fire foam concentrates that exclude DGME completely and that are less toxic than conventional DGME-containing concentrates. 1.
