A floating media filter comprising:a. a filter housing having an influent inlet connected to a source of waste water, the influent inlet being positioned below an effluent outlet;b. a floating media positioned in the housing and forming a media bed when the filter is in a filtration stage, the media bed having a lower surface and an upper surface defining a filtration zone between the lower and upper media bed surfaces during the filtration stage;c. a diffuser trough including an upper edge, the diffuser trough positioned in the filter housing such that (i) the lower surface of the media bed, when the filter is in the filtration stage, is below the upper edge of the diffuser trough, and (ii) the influent inlet feeds directly into the diffuser trough, thereby directing inlet flow in a path substantially along an interior length of the diffuser trough;d. a backwashing mechanism, which during a backwashing stage, causes (i) lowering of the upper surface of the media bed to a point below the upper edge of the diffuser trough, and (ii) creation of an air space in a substantial portion of the filtration zone; ande. a water refill source flowing from at or above the upper edge of the diffuser trough as the upper surface of the media bed reaches the point below the upper edge of the diffuser trough, thereby creating a downward flow of water displacing the media upwards.2. The invention provides a method of and apparatus for filtering which provides the filtering of extremely small particles, greater dirt retention in the filter medium, higher flow rates through the filter medium, a smaller volume of filter medium, and improved backflushing or backwashing to obtain a cleaner medium. The medium is composed of finely divided particulate material which in the preferred embodiment is polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or wood sawdust, these materials being light and having great strength to provide stable, fine particles capable of being backflushed. While the apparatus can assume many different configurations, liquid permeable retainers preferably are provided at both the inlet and outlet sides of the filter medium. Where the filter medium is located between retainers, it is important to reverse the liquid flow at least through the inlet retainer during backflushing to remove any deposits from that retainer. As will be described, it is possible to use only one liquid permeable retainer together with agitation and hydraulic flow during backflushing to provide a simplified filter which is effective in some applications. The invention also features backflushing of a particulate filter medium which is very compact and contains relatively great dirt loads. Such backflushing utilizes both mechanical and hydraulic forces, and may be accomplished in several different ways. The media can be compacted, if desired, to reduce the size of the voids therein, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the filter medium in entrapping and holding extremely small particles of dirt therein. The filter medium is compacted prior to the filtration operation, such compaction being accomplished in any one of several ways, e.g. by the use of fluid pressure or a differential flow rate.

The ribbon supports the medium against outward flow filtering or backwashing, withstanding a pressure drop of 75 p.s.i. while contributing no more than 10% of the pressure drop across itself. The filter is suitable in particular as a replacement for soakaways used in scattered settlements or for the secondary treatment of waste waters containing slight traces of light liquids or surfactants.

A radial-flow filter (120) employing nonbonded granular particles (56) for filtering impurities from an influent, and that can be backwashed by fluidizing the granular particles (56) to free the impurities therefrom. During a backwashing operation, a backwash liquid applies an upwardly-directed drag force on an upper portion of the granular particles (56) to lift the same into a backwash chamber (62) for fluidization. Once the top portion of the granular particles (56) of the filtration bed is fluidized, the backwash liquid applies an upward force on a subsequent portion of the granular bed, thereby fluidizing the granular particles (56) in the backwash chamber (62). Subsequent sections of the granular bed are fluidized in a similar manner to thereby completely clean the granular particles (56). After the backwash operation, the granular particles (56) fall back to the filtration chamber (156) and form a filter bed for carrying out a filtration operation.

The invention relates to an underground buffer tank for storing and treating rainwater, the upper part of which is capable of supporting a load, and which is connected to a water supply and evacuation network. It uses two stages of alveolar layers for the storage 8 and settling 13 of rainwater associated with horizontal draining structures 11-15 as well as valves 17-17 'for emptying and filling the basin. A double evacuation circuit 7-7 'allows the subsequent emptying of one by the waters of the basin, and on the other hand the collected fines. This type of basin enables underground storage with active treatment of water laden with suspended fines.

The present invention includes a method for filtering flowing fluid so as to remove undesirable particulates and bacterial constituents and fluid filters for performing the method. The method comprising providing an enclosed channel for fluid flow and passing the fluid flow through a filter material (120, 122) disposed within the channel and the filter material comprising a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper (Cu) and zinc and being metal fibers having an average diameter from 12 microns to 150 microns, contact of the fluid with the fibers of the metal fiber wool (120, 122) providing a bactericide effect and inhibiting further propagation of bacteria and particulates from flowing through the filter material. The fluid filters may be a radial-flow fluid filter (10) comprising a multi-perforated pipe (14) and a plurality of overlapping layers of strips of fibrous metal wool (12) including metal wool containing copper (Cu), or an in-line flow fluid filter comprising a fluid channel (124, 222) and a filter material (120, 122) disposed within the fluid channel ((124, 222), wherein the filter material (120, 122) comprises a metal fiber wool of a metal alloy consisting primarily of copper (Cu) and zinc and being metal fibers having an average diameter from 12 microns to 150 microns. A multi-perforated shell (20) of the radial flow fluid filter (10) may have an inner diameter approximately equal to outer diameter of an outermost layer of wool and a tubular metal mesh encompassing the exterior of the pipe (14) between the pipe (14) and the innermost layer of metal wool (12), the tubular mesh being a woven mesh of stainless steel. The metal of the fiber wool layers (12) is a brass alloy having between 50-90 weight % copper and from 10-50 weight % zinc, a preferable density in a range between 0.4 g/cm3 to 2.5 g/cm3, a more preferred density in a range between 0.5 g/cm3 to about 1.5 g/cm3, and a most preferred density of approximately 0.8 g/cm3.
