Ion exchange resins are obtained by condensing glycerol dichlorhydrin with one or more alkaline polyamines until a gel is obtained, which is cured by heating. Polyamines specified are 1,3-diamino propane, 1,3- and 1,4-diamino-n-butane, 1,6-diamino-n-hexane, 1,5-diamino-n-pentane, 1 6-diamino-3-methyl-n-hexane tetraethylene pentamine, triethylene tetramine, penta-ethylene hexamine. Complex mixtures of polyethylene polyamines of high molecular weight obtained by the addition of large numbers of molecules of ammonia to ethylene dibromide or dichloride may also be used. The condensation is carried out in presence of strong alkali to neutralize the hydrochloric acid set free and in the presence of solvents, e.g. water, methanol, ethanol, monomethyl or monoethyl ethers of ethylene glycol. In examples: (1) glycerol dichlorhydrin, tetraethylene pentamine and water are reacted, the oily phases are chilled and transferred to another vessel where sodium hydroxide is added on heating, gelation occurring ...
