This invention relates generally to electrode materials, electrochemical cells employing such materials, and methods of synthesizing such materials. The electrode materials have a crystal structure with a high ratio of Li to metal M, which is found to improve capacity by enabling the transfer of a greater amount of lithium per metal, and which is also found to improve stability by retaining a sufficient amount of lithium after charging. Furthermore, synthesis techniques are presented which result in improved charge and discharge capacities and reduced particle sizes of the electrode materials. 1. An electrode material comprising Li(V ,Mo)(PO)(PO).2. The electrode material of claim 1 , comprising at least one dopant selected from the group consisting of nickel claim 1 , cobalt claim 1 , manganese claim 1 , iron claim 1 , titanium claim 1 , copper claim 1 , silver claim 1 , magnesium claim 1 , calcium claim 1 , strontium claim 1 , zinc claim 1 , aluminum claim 1 , chromium claim 1 , gallium claim 1 , germanium claim 1 , tin claim 1 , tantalum claim 1 , niobium claim 1 , zirconium claim 1 , fluorine claim 1 , sulfur claim 1 , yttrium claim 1 , tungsten claim 1 , silicon claim 1 , and lead.3. The electrode material of or claim 1 , wherein (V claim 1 ,Mo) comprises V claim 1 , Mo claim 1 , or any combination of V and Mo.4.
