An apparatus is disclosed for applying a strip of sealant to a web of roofing shingle stock as the web moves along a processing path. A source of sealant is supplied and a delivery system is configured to deliver the sealant from the source of the sealant to the slot die under a predetermined pressure. The slot die and delivery system are configured to project a stream of sealant toward and onto the peripheral surface of the applicator wheel at a predetermined speed. This applies a coating of sealant to the peripheral surface of the applicator wheel. The moving web of roofing shingle stock engages the sealant on the peripheral surface of the applicator wheel as the peripheral surface moves adjacent to the web. This, in turn, draws sealant from the peripheral surface of the applicator and onto the web of roofing shingle stock thereby applying the strip of sealant to the web.

The adhesive may be applied at relatively low pressure so as to preserve surface texture without significant deformation of the web. The cured adhesive material inhibits the web from reassuming a two-dimensional state or may contribute additional texture by rising above the surface of the web. This process may not only increase the bulk of the web when dry and wet, but also increase the wet resiliency, the wet strength, and the tactile properties of the web.

[Problem] To enable the transfer coating of an elaborate and fine pattern of hot melt adhesive onto a workpiece, and to extend the service life of the first roll and the doctor blade. [Solving Approach] To form a predetermined pattern of hollows on the surface of the first roll and at the same time to form a pattern of protrusions on the surface of the second roll. that differs from that on the first roll. By this approach, the adhesive is transferred only to the protrusions of said second roll even if excess adhesive remains in the hollows of the first roll and even if some adhesive remains in areas other than the hollows. Accordingly, a necessary and sufficient: amount of adhesive can be transferred onto the workpiece without the simultaneous transfer of any stains. In this way, an elaborate, fine, and clear pattern without any spreading and/or loss of shape can be obtained. Furthermore, there is no need to intensively scrape excess adhesive off the surface of the first roll with the doctor blade, which in turn allows the force used to press the doctor blade against the first roll to be reduced, the result being an extension of service life for both the first roll and the doctor blade.

An apparatus for applying a liquid lubricant in a pattern to a face of a sheet workpiece has a support frame through which the workpiece is transported in a travel direction substantially parallel to its face, a plurality of axles in the frame extending along respective axes generally perpendicular to the direction and individually displaceable generally perpendicular to the direction and to the respective axes, and respective liquid-pervious rollers journaled on the axles about the respective axes. A liquid lubricant is fed to the rollers and respective actuators connected between the axles and the frame displace the respective rollers perpendicular to the direction and to the respective axes into and out of contact with the workpiece as same passes in the direction through the frame. A controller connected to the actuators individually controls and operates same to apply the liquid lubricant in the rollers to the workpiece in a predetermined pattern as the workpiece passes through the frame.
