A spring wire is subjected to a first shot peening process and a second shot peening process. In the first shot peening process, a first, shot is projected on the spring wire at a first projectile speed. High kinetic energy of the first shot produces compressive residual stress in a region ranging from the surface of the spring wire to a deep position. In the second spring wire process, a second shot is projected at a second projectile speed lower than the speed of the first shot. The kinetic energy of the second shot is lower than that of the first shot. The low kinetic energy of the second shot increases the compressive residual stress in a region near the surface of the spring wire.

The aligning means may comprise a spring ratchet 46 carried by the clutch part 28 and always in engagement with the teeth of the part 31 so that counter-clockwise rotation of this part is transmitted to the parts 28, 21, but the part 19 is not affected. The stop 42 is kept in operative position by a spring 60 during the counter-clockwise movement of the part 32, whether the feed rolls are being driven or the clutch 28, 31 is open, so that an insufficient length of the workpiece cannot be fed. During the clockwise movement of the part 32, the work is not being fed and the stop 42 is withdrawn by a cam 59.

Accordingly, the present invention can minimize the fraction defective, such as disconnection, by minimizing the brittleness of the copper-clad aluminum and can improve the characteristics of the copper-clad aluminum, such as electrical conductivity.
