There is also described a novel method for making such a forming roll.

A machine for rolling balls or profiled articles from solid bars includes a central rotatable roll which has a helical scroll on its surface and which is surrounded by an annular structure having a complementary scrolled surface, the roll and structure defining a throat through which the bars are drawn. For forming balls from rods 52 the central roll 50 is located within a fixed housing 51, or alternatively within an annular roll. Doublestart scrolls of opposite hand are provided on the adjacent roll or housing surfaces. The rods are progressively deformed to produce halls during planetary motion of the rods. In an alternative form, Fig. 4, a series of radially disposed disc-like rolls 64 form the annular structure, the rolls being driven synchronously with their peripheries in register and forming a continuous scroll. In either of the above cases the annular structure can be rotated in the opposite direction to the centra] roll, thereby obviating rotation of the rods 52 or 62 about the central roll.

When a cylindrical component with reduced diameter over its central section is produced by forming rollers, a considerable tensile force is set up by the tapered sides of the forming wedges. Since this tensile force is a function of the taper angle and the diameter reduction ratio, it is a limiting factor on roller forming. By progressively undercutting the tapered sides, starting with no undercut at the thin end of the forming wedge, the tensile force set up decreases from a maximum at the beginning of the forming process to zero at the end of it. This leads to an improved diameter reduction ratio and thus a higher rolling efficiency.

The assembly 1 Fig. 2 includes an axially slidable sleeve 9 supported within a fixed bracket 8 and carrying an abutment 36 which is contacted by the bar during feeding. Axial movement of the sleeve is limited in both directions by an adjustable nut 17 whose upward extension 16 moves in a fixed slot 15, and a spring-biased pad 11 serves to brake movement of the sleeve. A cam roller 27 is carried by a downward extension of the nut and cooperates with a cam 32 attached to the roll 5. In operation, the bar M pushes the sleeve to the left which causes the upward extension 16 to trip a switch 31 for starting rotation of the rolls. The switch provides an electrical indication that the stack has been fed in. When a complete rotation of the rolls has been made (and the bar has been profiled by the tools) the cam 32 moves the nut 17 back to its initial position.
