A profile is first worked into the screw shaft preform; this includes radial and axial resting surfaces. A pre-formed blank screw head is then pressed onto the shaft, using a tool. The ductile head material fills up the space between the radial and axial resting surfaces in the region of the pressed-on head. In this way, head and shaft are interlocked together and the final form of the headed screw is reached.

A method and system for increasing damping capacity in a mechanical fastener by utilizing dry friction between individual wires of a sheathed rope is disclosed. For metal fasteners, the sheathed rope is inserted loosely into a thick-walled metal tube. The tube is then rolled to reduce the tube diameter, thereby uniformly embedding the rope into the tube material. The tube is then subjected to either cold or hot forming. After forming, the fastener blank may be threaded. For composite or plastic fasteners, the sheathed rope includes insert locators attached to the sheathing. The sheathed rope having the insert locators is placed in the mold cavity prior to the polymerizable material being injected into the mold. Regardless of the embodiment, the resulting fastener has increased damping due to the dry inter-wire friction within the embedded rope which develops between the surfaces of individual wires upon dynamic loading of a fastened joint. 1. A vibration-damping fastener comprising:a body having a first end, a second end and a long axis;a vibration-damping metal rope embedded in said body along said axis between said first and second ends, said rope comprising a plurality of wires positioned next to one another and a metal sheathing encasing said plurality of wires, whereby sliding movement of the surfaces of the wires relative to one another dampens resonant vibration of the fastener.2. A rolling operation for finishing the threads is completed in the latter half of the rolling operation by the group of the finishing teeth for the serrations. The difference in rolling diameters is absorbed by the slide of the aforesaid thread rolling tools on a shaft member (work piece), thus enabling the simultaneous formation of serrations and threads in a short rolling stroke.

The adjustment means can make fine adjustments to improve quality and facilitate work.

SELF-LOCKING THREADED FASTENER ABSTRACT A self-locking fastener combination is pro vided with a thread construction having a thread which deforms to securely lock when a set of male and female members are threaded together and which is reformed upon unthreading of the members to allow subsequent reuse thereof. The female member is provided with a conventional thread while the male member has a special helical thread defined by leading and trailing flanks in which a portion of the leading flank diverges away from the leading flank of the fe-male member to produce a space between the threads at the male thread root. A portion of the male thread root is truncated and is of lesser depth than the female thread such that part of the female thread crest firmly engages and is deformed by the trun-cated male thread root into the space adjacent such root when the members are threaded together. The deformed female thread crest produces firm metal-to-metal contact between the members completely around several revolutions of the circumference of the threads in order to preclude lateral movement of one member relative to the other and resultant loosening of the fastener when subjected to vibration.

A self-thread forming threaded fastener has a straight thread on a shank of circular cross section and a tapered thread on a workentering end. The tapered portion of the thread is of lobular root, pitch and crest surface cross sections and which lobular configuration is continued, but to a diminishing extent, on the first few threads on the shank immediately adjacent to the tapered section. The fastener is formed by rolling between thread-rolling dies a blank having a cylindrical shank of circular cross section and an end section of arcuate lobular cross section including a tapered portion. The cylindrical shank may include a reduced diameter section adjacent to the end section. At least the lobular and tapered portions of the blank are intermittently deflected first in one direction and then in the opposite direction by the dies. Due to such deflections of the end of the blank, a lobular tapered thread is produced on the tapered portion of the blank. The reduced diameter section prevents the thread crest formed therein from being radially outwardly of the crest of the round thread on the shank.

Thread forming dies to form a continuous helical thread for a metal fastener. The dies are designed and constructed to eliminate laps and discontinuities in the thread form particularly in larger diameter fastener blanks. The dies are constructed by calculating a roll-off section which tapers down to expel the threaded fastener then determining the length of a dwell section having a full depth grooves to create a well-defined and stable thread. Finally, a roll-up ramp section is calculated along which the grooves of the die become deeper along its length until reaching the desired thread angle and depth. The thread forming dies include a stationary die and a moving die. The fastener blank is rolled therebetween causing the die faces to form the thread as the blank moves from the roll-up section, through the dwell section and out the roll-off section.

The die is intended for use in conjunction with a complementary die for rolling screw thread of a de-pitched prevailing-torque screw bolt and is of the type having a first and a second section with parallel cruciform-pitch hill (5)-and-dale (4) corrugations, the corrugations of the first section being out of phase relative to those of the second section. The two sections are separated by a region (6) which is parallel to the corrugations and which is preferably formed as a rib (6) whose width is greater than that of each hill (5) of the corrugations. The thread produced by these dies has no abrupt interruption.
