Plant is used to remove mold residues from castings by high voltage discharges in a liq., e.g. water. A double chain conveyor, fitted with loading and unloading devices, carries the castings continuously through a zone (a) in the water bath; and the number of electrode units located in the treatment zone (a) is the same as the number of castings travelling through zone (a). The electrode units are pref. hinged on the conveyor frame so the electrode tips move together with the castings through zone (a), while driven gear wheels mounted on one side of the bath use grippers to rotate the castings while they travel through zone (a), i.e. so all the surface of each casting is treated to the electric discharge. Used esp. in mass prodn. to remove the residues of shell moulds from the castings, together with ingates, scale, rust, oil, etc., thus polishing the castings.

A riser topping gathering system and method are disclosed. The system and method are used in gathering riser topping material from the riser cavities of the cope portion of a mold. A capture hood includes high-pressure air outlets and is connected to a duct system, collector and air moving mechanism. The capture hood is moved into contact with the top of the cope mold portion. The air moving mechanism pulls a stream of ambient air over the top of the cope mold portion while high pressure air is pulsed into the riser cavities through the high air pressure outlets. The pulses of high-pressure air activate the riser topping materials and raise them out of the riser cavities and into the path of the ambient air in the capture hood. The moving ambient air carries the riser topping material out of the capture hood and into the duct system. The air and riser topping material is moved to the collector where the riser topping material is separated from the air. The riser topping material may then be gathered from the collector and disposed of or recycled. The cope mold portion may then be moved to another workstation for removal of the risers from the riser cavities.

A two-stage investment removal apparatus for removing investment material from an investment casting includes first and second stage sub-assemblies operative for different impacting actions. The first stage sub-assembly includes spaced drive rollers for rotating the investment flask on its side, and a pneumatic hammer which engages the side wall of the investment flask for imparting impact energy to the investment flask while the flask is being rotated. The flask is placed in a protective sleeve which more evenly distributes the impact forces around the side wall of the flask during rotation. The second stage sub-assembly includes a tubular chamber, and a spring-biased seat in the chamber for receiving the bottom end of the central casting trunk when the flask is positioned on the seat. The chamber includes radial spring arms for centering the flask and casting trunk on the seat. The second stage sub-assembly further includes a vertically oriented pneumatic hammer in engagement with the upper end of the central casting trunk for imparting vertical impact energy to the central trunk. The vertical hammer cooperates with the spring biased seat to cause the casting to resiliently resonate and cause the investment molding material to disintegrate apart from the investment casting.
