Suitable coolants are pressurized water, metals which are liquid below 100°C and also ionic liquids (salt melts) which are liquid above room temperature and up to at least 200°C, it being possible for the differences in temperature between the coolant inlet and the coolant outlet in the mould to be between 5°C and 150°C.

More specifically, the inorganic powder having a needle-like crystal structure has an average length of 1-3,000 m and an aspect ratio of 1-1,000.

This invention relates to an apparatus (high shear device) and method for treating liquid metals by intensive melt shearing. The apparatus comprises a stator and a rotor with a small gap between them to provide intensive melt shearing for dispersing efficiently and distributing uniformly gas, liquid and solid phases in liquid metals without severe turbulence at the melt surface. The device can be extended to a multistage high shear pump by arranging individual rotor/stator assemblies either concentrically (one in another) or vertically. The device and high shear pump can be readily integrated into existing casting processes. The device is suitable for use in casting processes including high pressure die casting, low pressure die casting, gravity die casting, sand casting, investment casting, direct chill casting, twin roll casting, and any other casting process which requires liquid metal as a feedstock. In addition, the device is particularly suitable for providing conditioned liquid metal for both shape casting and continuous (or semi-continuous) casting of metallic materials, preparing high quality semi-solid slurries, solidification processing of particulate reinforced metal matrix composites, mixing immiscible metallic liquids and degassing of liquid metals prior to any casting processes. 1. An inert gas mantel, circular in cross-section, protects the molten stream as it flows from the outlet into the casting vessel, and is generated at a pressure of pref. 1.5 bar. An inert gas pressure of pref. between 10 and 100 Pa above the external pressure is maintained in the furnace or transport unit, or both esp. over the transport and discharge channels, also at the transition pt. and in the interior of the casting vessel. The inert gas also serves to cool the covers and shielding mechanisms and comprises nitrogen or similar gas, whose free oxygen component has been consumed by burning in a combustion chamber and which is finally cooled.
