A workpiece is fixed by a retracting mechanical chuck mounted on a spindle head of a five-axis control machining center. The apparent outer diameter of the workpiece is increased by a jig. Clamp surfaces of the jaws and a support surface of the jig are formed on the machining center. A cutting tool is mounted on a spindle by an automatic tool exchanger. The workpiece is rotated about an axis to grind an end surface of the workpiece to approximately a predetermined target shape, which is a spherical surface. A grinder is then mounted on the spindle by the automatic tool exchanger, and the grinder is set relative to the workpiece by five-axis control such that the inclination angle, the offset amount, etc. satisfy a predetermined relationship according to the desired grinding. The grinder is then fed in the Z-axis direction to form the spherical surface by grinding.

An abrasive pad for use on hard surfaces is described. The pad includes a fibrous, non-woven body with an abrasive coating containing diamond particles applied to a first side thereof. A plurality of diamond-impregnated abrasive elements is affixed to the first side. One or more of the abrasive elements are located near an outer edge of the first side of the pad. A resilient reinforcing material is applied to the outer edge of the pad to resist compression of the pad and to maintain adjacent abrasive elements parallel to a surface being worked on. The abrasive elements at least partially recess into the pad body and enable simultaneous contact of the abrasive elements and the pad with the surface being worked on. Thereby, multiple surface-preparation steps, e.g. polishing and burnishing, are completed simultaneously reducing surface-preparation time and eliminating separate surface-preparation steps.

The present invention in one or more embodiments provides a roller tool for roughening a friction ring of a brake disk, the roller tool including a roller body including inner and outer ends and a casing surface positioned there-between, the inner end differing in cross-section dimension than the outer end, the casing surface including thereupon one or more protrusions for contacting the friction ring. The roller tool may further include a support frame supporting the roller body. An adaptor assembly for concrete finishing trowels that enables efficient polishing of concrete surfaces, and trowels equipped with said adaptors.
