980,809. Grinding. WOLF ELECTRIC TOOLS Ltd. Jan. 8, 1964 [Jan. 28, 1963], No. 3444/63. Heading B3D. [Also in Division B5] A surface working tool, such as a plane, sander, abrader or polisher, comprises a slipper 6, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted on a frame having a flat base 1 so as to oscillate about an axis perpendicular to the base, means 10 for fixing a tool 11 to the slipper so as to project through a space 13 in the base to present an exposed working surface, and a spindle 16 mounted in bearings 15 in the slipper and extending perpendicularly to the base, the spindle being so arranged that it is or may be eccentrically connected to a rotary drive member to cause oscillations of a tool attached to the slipper. As described, the tool is a plane and the means 10 consist of screws securing the tool to the slipper. The slipper has arcuate edges 7, 8 which are held below inturned flanges on the side walls 2, 3 of the frame. The spindle 16 mounted in the bearing 15 in the slipper is eccentrically disposed on a spindle 17 which is rotatable in a bearing 18 in a part 19 of the frame and rotated by an electric motor 20. Rotation of the spindle 17 by the motor cause the slipper to oscillate and points of the tool to trace the paths shown dotted in Fig. 2. In another embodiment, the movement of the slipper is about a screw 30, Fig. 4, extending upwardly from the base through a slot in the slipper. In a further embodiment, the slot is inclined to the length of the blade. The tool may be designed as an attachment for an electric drill.
