In the vacuum forming of a large thermoplastic sheet, the pressure on the upper surface thereof is reduced as it softens so that it is retained in substantially planar configuration. Theremoplastic sheet 1 is gripped between frame 4, 5 and maintained by elastomeric strip 8 in sealing contact with vertically reciprocable box 10 as it is heated from above and below, by electrical elements arrayed in overlapping relationship within box 10 and lower heating unit 17, whilst the box 10 is evacuated to counteract any sagging tendencies of the sheet 1 until a drop in pressure of the order of the sheet weight/unit length is attained. The lower heating unit is removed and shaping former 22 raised to sealingly engage lower frame member 5 whereupon, after removal of the box 10, air is withdrawn through holes 25 in the former 22 to mould sheet 1 into contact with the surface thereof. The sealing strip 7 of frame 4, 5 may be retained by adhesive within a groove therein and may be of V-section. Plasticized or unplasticized vinyl resins, polyethylene and polypropylene and polyacrylates may be formed by the method into ship's hulls, dishes, buckets, plates and ashtrays. An apparatus for producing a sheet having many hollow bodies from thermoplastic material such as polyethylene, used for cushioning and insulation, is disclosed. Film extruded from a T die, after being cooled, is heated by an induction heating roller with a jacket and inner cooling means. The induction heating roller with a jacket and inner cooling means has, along with the jacket within a rollershell, an induction coil for heating, and a hermetically sealed heat transfer medium between the jacket and the induction coil. The characteristic feature of the present invention is a cooling means provided to cool the heat transfer medium, with advantages of rapid temperature rise and fall, and uniform temperature distribution on the circumference and longitudinal axis of the roller. Using this apparatus, a sheet having many hollow bodies, with high transparency and high product yield without defects such as partial inferior fusing, can be produced.

A web of thermoplastic material extruded directly into a set of tempering rolls is cooled on its upper and lower surfaces while the interior of the web is kept molten. The partially cooled web is fed onto a conveyor on which it is fed to a thermoformer. The web remains on the conveyor until its surface layer in contact with the conveyor is reheated to a thermoformable temperature below that at which the web will stick to the conveyor. Apparatus for feeding a web of thermoplastic material from an extrusion to a thermoformer includes tempering rolls and conveyor means which can be adjusted in their relative positions and to control the length of conveyor means contacted by the web.

An improved method and apparatus for rapidly forming plastic foam shells from a flexible foam sheet. The foam sheet is i??er mittently passed through a radiaent heating unit and is rapidly heated on both sides to 130-250.degree.F to soften the foam. The heated foam sheet is immediately passed through a forming die unit in which the foam sheet is deformed partly into the die cavity by withdrawal of air from the cavity, and a die plug descends and final forms a shell while rapidly cooling the foam shell to below its plastic deformation temperature. By this forming method and apparatus. ethylene-containing foam shells having a depth 10-25 times the foam sheet initial thickness are rapidly formed at 10-30 cycles/minute.

A retortable container has a wall of at least two co-formed laminae. This wall is highly impermeable to fluids selected from the group consisting of oxygen and aromatic vapors. The wall includes a first load-carrying lamina of a first plastic material. This load-carrying lamina has been formed without mechanical hysteresis in the melt phase by a thermal pressure forming apparatus to cause strengthening with orientation of the load-carrying lamina in at least one axis but without memory of its pre-melt phase shape. The wall also includes a second sealing lamina of a second plastic material. This second sealing lamina is coextensive with the first load-carrying lamina. Consequently, the container formed by the apparatus is retortable, i.e. it can withstand temperatures and pressures of a retort chamber without undergoing significant and permanent distortion.

A process and an apparatus are disclosed for the manufacture of objects of crystalline polystyrene. The apparatus comprises a screw extruder (8) having a die (10) with an outlet of adjustable profile, mounted at the end of the screw (9) of the extruder, a roller press (12) having a plurality of temperature adjustable rollers (13, 14, 15) and at least one pair of draw rollers (16, 17) to draw the sheet, at least one of said draw rollers being temperature-adjustable, at least one sheet supporting roller (19) which is free to rotate about its own axis and is of low thermal conductivity at least on its surface, two switches (35, 36) controlling the build-up of the sheet in the region between the pair of draw rollers (16, 17) and the sheet supporting roller (19) which can be activated by detection of the position of the sheet by means of mechanical sensors or photocells, a device (20) for heating both edges of the sheet which can be positioned in relation to the breadth of the sheet and adjusted for temperature in relation to the thickness and the distance moved by the advancing sheet, at least one drawing device having chains (22) and sprockets (22 min , 22 sec ) acting on the edges of the sheet, at least one device (24, 25) for heating both sides of the sheet in relation to the part which is to be thermoformed, a forming device having a press component (29), a device for removing objects from the press component (29), a device (31, 32) for stacking the objects and a device (33) for grinding up the waste.

The invention can be used for vacuum processes and generally in the heating of plastics films. Whilst the aim can be seen as reducing the energy input and as reducing heating times and as avoiding quality defects, the object consists in achieving a uniform direct heating of the plastics film depending on the film grade used with simultaneous measurement of the film temperature, with an application being permitted even for highly contoured designs. This is substantially achieved by designing the film heating device as a controllable height-adjustable contact heater, the heating surface being air- permeable and having an anti-adhesive coating on its underside. The contact heater is surrounded by a housing provided with a thermal insulation, on which a connection is provided for a vacuum source. An oven for preheating continuous thermoplastic sheet prior to thermoforming the sheet with plunger assistance comprises a tower adjacent the forming press and through which the sheet passes up and down vertical paths while subjected to heat from between the two film paths. The heating pattern ensures that the underside of the film entering a conventional forming tool (base cavity, overhead plunger) is as hot or hotter than the upper face, so that (a) the moulding will adhere better to the mould than the plunger, (b) the underside can be hot enough to bond with mould inserts, e.g. labels without overheating the upper surface. The vertical oven requires relatively little floor space alongside a forming tool, and a chimney effect can be used to facilitate removal of volatiles more efficiently than from a long horizontal oven. The vertical sheet paths avoids risk associated with horizontal ovens of sheet sagging away from or towards horizontal banks of heaters.
