A film manufacturing apparatus includes: a material supply unit which supplies an intermediate film; a pre-heating unit which pre-heats the intermediate film supplied from the material supply unit; a stretching unit which stretches and performs a first heat-treatment to the intermediate film supplied through the pre-heating unit; a heating treatment unit which performs a second heat-treatment to the stretched intermediate film supplied from the stretching unit; a clipping device which clips lateral ends of the intermediate film to transfer the intermediate film and applies a transverse directional tension to the intermediate film; and a cutting device disposed in at least one of the stretching unit and the heat-treatment unit, wherein the cutting device separates the lateral ends from a center portion of the intermediate film by cutting the intermediate film. 1. An apparatus and methods for stretching one or more zones of an anisotropic web and anisotropic webs including one or more stretched zones is provided. Each of the stretched zones in the web is stretched in the cross-web direction, i.e., the direction transverse to the down-web direction. The stretching can be performed continuously as the web is advancing through the apparatus in the down-web direction. The method for stretching an extensible web in the cross direction generally is practiced on a substantially continuous, extensible anisotropic web. The cross web stretching occurs in an orientation zone established by an orientation unit. The orientation unit moves the web out of the plane of the web where the web is under tension, but without any side restraints. The web moves over the orientation unit where the degree of orientation is proportional to the cross direction displacement of a portion of the web by the orientation unit. The anisotropic web has a tensile strength in the downweb direction greater than the cross direction such that the web is preferentially displaced in the cross web direction by the orientation unit. This can be a downweb direction tensile strength at least 50 percent greater than the cross web direction.

A 'zero strain' stretch laminate web exhibiting a non-uniform degree of elasticity, as measured in the direction of elasticization at various points along an axis oriented substantially perpendicular to the direction of elasticization. Improved method and apparatus for non-uniformly stretching 'zero strain' stretch laminate webs to impart elasticity thereto in the direction of stretching, at least up to the point of initial stretching are also disclosed. The 'zero strain' stretch laminate material (1) is formed of at least two plies of material which are either intermittently or substantially continuously secured to one another along at least a portion of their coextensive surfaces while in a substantially untensioned ('zero strain') condition. One of the plies (4a) is stretchable and elastomeric, while the second ply (5, 6) is elongatable, but not necessarily elastomeric. The second ply will, upon stretching of the laminate, be at least to a degree permanently elongated so that, upon release of the applied tensile forces, it will not return to its original undistorted configuration. This results in z-direction bulking of the laminate web when the applied tension is released as well as elastic extensibility in the direction of initial stretching, at least up to the point of initial stretching. In a particularly preferred embodiment of the present invention, the mechanical stretching of said laminate web is carried out by passing said laminate web between at least one pair of meshing corrugated rolls (21, 25), the degree of meshing between said corrugated rolls being non-uniform about the periphery of sail rolls, whereby said laminate web is subjected to non-uniform incremental stretching as it passes therebetween to produce a varying degree of elasticity in the resultant web.

A film that is formed from a biodegradable polymer blend of different aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters is provided. More specifically, the blend contains a first copolyester formed from a terephthalic acid monomer. The use of a terephthalic acid monomer results in a polymer chain containing 1,4-(para-) terephthalate units linked in a generally linear configuration (e.g., ˜180°). The blend also contains a second aliphatic-aromatic copolyester formed from a phthalic acid and/or isophthalic acid monomer. The use of such a monomer results in a polymer chain containing 1,2-(ortho-) and/or 1,3-(meta-) linked units. The inclusion of 1,2-(ortho-) and/or 1,3-(meta-) linked units into the polymer backbone of the second copolyester introduces an angle or “kink” (e.g., ˜120° kink for a 1,3-linkage) into the otherwise linear polymer chain. The “kinks” in the second copolyester backbone reduce its melting point and degree of crystallinity, which have an influence on its physical properties (e.g., toughness, tensile strength, and crystallization rate). Thus, the physical properties of the second copolyester may differ substantially from those of the first copolyester. In this regard, the “kinked” second copolyester can provide flexibility for forming films with a wide range of properties that is superior to that which may be achieved using either of copolyesters alone.

A bow spreader bar employed in a plastic film processing arrangement incorporates an extruded member and a low-friction plastic wear cover. The bow spreader bar is positioned in advance of the film take-up roll and presses into the film web to eliminate folds, wrinkles, or creases. The extrusion can be of aluminum or another light-weight material having a T-shaped profile that is rounded on a side that faces the film so that the extrusion has an arcuate front surface. The associated wear cover is made of a wear resistant plastic material and is disposed on the arcuate surface of said extrusion. Preferably, the extrusion is formed with one or more tubular portions and can be fitted for fluid cooling. The arcuate surface of the extrusion can be provided with a low-friction surface treatment.

Transversely fibrillated films are prepared by embossing a molten thermoplastic film with transverse striations, transversely stretching the film while leaving an unstretched edge portion which, after stretching is at least 100 percent thicker than the embossed and stretched section. The film is then subjected to fibrillating stress under conditions whereby the thick edges are not affected. These edges then serve to hold the transverse fibers, resulting from the fibrillation, together in an integral structure for further handling. The fibrillation structure is useful for preparing laminar nonwoven fabrics having the filaments in different layers disposed at an angle to one another.

Film formed from a blend of biodegradable aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters

A film that is formed from a biodegradable polymer blend of different aliphatic-aromatic copolyesters is provided. More specifically, the blend contains a first copolyester formed from a terephthalic acid monomer. The use of a terephthalic acid monomer results in a polymer chain containing 1,4-(para-) terephthalate units linked in a generally linear configuration (e.g., ˜180°). The blend also contains a second aliphatic-aromatic copolyester formed from a phthalic acid and/or isophthalic acid monomer. The use of such a monomer results in a polymer chain containing 1,2-(ortho-) and/or 1,3-(meta-) linked units. The inclusion of 1,2-(ortho-) and/or 1,3-(meta-) linked units into the polymer backbone of the second copolyester introduces an angle or “kink” (e.g., ˜120° kink for a 1,3-linkage) into the otherwise linear polymer chain. The “kinks” in the second copolyester backbone reduce its melting point and degree of crystallinity, which have an influence on its physical properties (e.g., toughness, tensile strength, and crystallization rate). Thus, the physical properties of the second copolyester may differ substantially from those of the first copolyester. In this regard, the “kinked” second copolyester can provide flexibility for forming films with a wide range of properties that is superior to that which may be achieved using either of copolyesters alone.
