In producing a receptacle a web of plastics material is moulded so that the web forms a receptacle with a liquid-tight side wall, and the formed receptacle is severed from the rest of the web by means of cooperating elements movable relatively to one another and simultaneously one or more apertures are formed in the base of the receptacle. A filter disc may be located within the receptacle. In one advantageous mode, the nylon is heat crystallized from a substantially amorphous state and simultaneously moisturized. Associated method and apparatus for making said casing are also provided. In use, the casing is stuffed to within its elastic limit so that radial deformation is uniform along the length of the tubular casing. As the exposed nylon dries out, the casing shrinks, thus further elastically stretching tightly over the stuffed food roll contained therein.

This invention relates to a process for making polyethylene mouldings for the production of heat- recoverable artefacts. In the process a former is heated to about 240 DEG C and immersed in a bed of fluidised polyethylene powder. Preferably the powder has 90% of its particles in the size range 150-300 micron and is at 75 DEG C. The former becomes coated with the powder, is withdrawn, and is heated to about 240 DEG C to fuse the coating. The coated former is cooled to 50-60 DEG C and the coating is stripped off the former at this temperature to produce an artefact. To produce a heat- recoverable artefact, the artefact is irradiated with 20-25 M Rad of gamma rays or high energy electrons, deformed at an elevated temperature and cooled while held in the deformed state. The heat-recoverable artefacts will find use as end caps for cables and gloves for cable terminations in the electrical industry.

A method of making a composite material having elasticized portions includes supplying a web of temperature sensitive elastic material, applying a microwave sensitive material to selected regions of the elastic material and subsecting the composite material to microwave energy. The microwave energy may be converted into heat by the microwave sensitive material thereby heating the microwave sensitive material and activating regions of the temperature sensitive elastic material adjacent the microwave sensitive material. The activated regions of the elastic material provide the elasticized portions in the composite material. Alternatively, the microwave sensitive material may reflect the microwave energy which may then directly heat and activate the regions of the elastic material opposite the selected regions to which the microwave sensitive material is applied. The method is particularly useful in the manufacture of garment-type articles such as disposable absorbent articles.

This invention involves a process for the utilization of an unusual memory characteristic which is present in neutralized sulfonated elastomeric materials, wherein the process includes the steps of distorting or compressing the neutralized sulfonated elastomeric article, then heating the article to a selected elevated temperature, holding the article at the elevated temperature for a limited time while maintaining the distorted shape, cooling the article to near room temperature, and releasing it from the device used to compress or distort it. The released cooled elastomer does not return to its original form, but rather substantially retains the distorted shape for an indefinite period of time. The elastomer in the distorted shape is heated to an appropriate elevated temperature thereby allowing the article to recover towards its original undistorted shape.

Memory polymer optical fiber splicer and methods

The present invention involves an optical fiber splicer which is made of a unistructural mass (21c) of inherent shaped memory polymer material. The uni­structural mass has a longitudinal dimension with opposite ends which includes a first bore (25c) at one end and a second bore (29c) at the other end wherein the bores go into the mass and to each other. In a preferred embodiment, the first bore and the second bore are merely a single continuous oriface. The unistruc­tural mass has a first shape and a second shape and the first shape is a unique, recoverable, pre­determined inherent shape wherein the first bore and second bore each have a preset diameter to accommodate and tightly hold end segments of denuded optical fibers (31,35) of predetermined diameter in spliced, butted alignment with one another. The second shape is a deformed shape caused by solvent swelling and partial shrinking of the inherent memory polymer material such that the first bore and second bore each have swollen predetermined diameters which are greater than the diameters of the end segments of the denuded optical fibers so as to loosely and freely receive the end segments of the denuded optical fibers. Thus, the unistructural mass of inherent shape memory polymer material is initially formed in the first shape, also known as the inherent shape, and is then swollen and partially shrunk to its second or deformed shape and is capable of being returned to its first shape by application of a non-mechanical stimulus thereto, such as heat (Fig. 6). The invention is also directed to the method of preparing the optical splicer as well as the method of using the optical splicer to obtain a butt-to-butt splicing of end segments of optical fibers.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The present invention is directed to a device and method for precise positioning, or alignment of one or more articles with respect to the device or to each other. The device comprises one or more elements of Unistructural Mass of Inherent Memory Polymer with one or more internal cavities which have inherent shapes with at least one cross-sectional configuration which is congruent to a cross-sectional configuration shape of the said article(s) in the positioned or aligned position(s). The unistructural mass has cross-sectional configurations which are the same or smaller than those corresponding to the positions of the articles. The unistructural mass is deformed such that the articles can be readily inserted into the corresponding cavities. In one embodiment, a single unistructural mass has a single cavity for precision positioning of the article. In another embodiment, the mass has at least two cavities for article alignment. In another embodiment, a plurality of unistructural masses are aligned or connected and each contains at least one such cavity. Once the articles are inserted into their corresponding cavities, the inherent memory polymer is returned to its inherent shape by non-mechanical stimulus to force the articles into precisely defined position.

Irradiation also allows faster stretching of the film, thus giving higher rates of prodn.
