A method and device for producing boxes is provided. The boxes include a cut-out shape in the form of the bottom or the lid, with a lateral wall. The lateral wall is formed from a strip having a beginning, an end, and connection tongues. Then, the beginning of the strip is applied and fixed to the lateral surface of a cylindrical female mould having a cross-section corresponding to the cross-section of the box, by means of a male mould. Then, the female mould is turned. The strip is sucked onto the lateral surface and held in place by means of a vacuum. After an adhesive has been applied to the beginning or end of the strip, the beginning and end of the strip are stuck together. Then, a cut-out shape in the form of the bottom or the lid is pressed onto the connection tongues.

In one or more embodiments, a band of adhesive may be applied about a perimeter of a paperboard substrate having a first edge and a second edge opposed to one another and a third edge and a fourth edge opposed to one another. The band of adhesive may at least partially surround a first area that is substantially free from the adhesive. A second area that may be substantially free from the adhesive may be located between the third edge and the first area. The first area and the second area may be separated by the band of adhesive. A shrinkable film may be secured to the paperboard substrate with the adhesive to produce a paperboard blank. The third edge and the fourth edge may be overlapped to form a sidewall. A bottom panel may be secured to the sidewall at or adjacent the second edge. The first edge may be curled to form a brim.

An apparatus for converting a one-piece paperboard blank into a packaging tray comprises an upright magazine for storing a stack of paperboard blanks, a feeding device beneath the magazine for removing the blanks one by one and advancing the blanks to a forming station, and a forming and gluing device for simultaneously folding and gluing the blank to form an upright tray. The process includes steps for pre-breaking or pre-folding the flaps (Fig. 5) which enable the final folding of the flaps to be performed with the necessary reliability and speed. All except the final step of the manufacturing process are performed while the blanks are being conveyed at a constant high rate along the length of the machine.

The bottom finishing station has a seam clamp engageable with overlapped edges of the sidewall blank to form a side seam, and a clamp ring selectively movable into engagement with the seam clamp. The clamp ring includes an annular wall forming a recess for receiving a rotatable tool which presses against the flap portion and the lip to form a bottom seal. Part of the seam clamp protrudes into the clamp ring, and part of the clamp ring protrudes into the seam clamp to form a bridge acting against the overlapped side seam at the top of the lip.

A lined carton is formed by making a continuous tube of lining material, securing it to carton blanks in succession, folding the carton blanks over .the tube and cutting the tube into lengths. The carton is of tubular form with three joined and one separate end closing flap 2, the joined flaps folding inwardly to nip the lining against the wall carrying the separate flaps, the nipped lining end 6 then being sealed and the separate flap 2 secured over it. Lines of weakening (not shown) may be provided at one corner to enable parts of the flaps to be torn open to form a pouring spout. Apparatus for .lining the carton receives the lining material 25 from a roll 21 and feeds it over rollers 23, 24, a glue wheel 31 applying adhesive to one margin and folders 32 folding it about a plate 29 to form a tube. The tube is applied to the carton blanks 17 which have previously received lines of glue from wheels 15, 16. Folders, not shown, fold the carton blank about the tube which is cut between the blanks to produce the collapsed carton ready for setting up. The apparatus may include means for breaking the carton blank creases, prior to application of the lining and means for applying transverse glue strips to the carton blank. In a bottle-making machine of the type in which a web of paper is wound on an intermittentlyrotating form, bottom blanks 94 which have been automatically fed to the end of the form 32 are held in position during the rotation of the latter by a plate 96 carried by a spring-controlled part 97 slidable on the end of an intermittently-rotating shaft 99. The part 97 carries sliding spring- controlled fingers 105 arranged to centralize the blanks opposite the end of the form 32. When the shaft 99 is moved to the right by the end 127 of a lever, the plate 96 presses the blank against the end of the form 32, and the fingers 105 are moved to engage the blank by a collar 108 on the shaft 99 engaging adjusting-screws 107 on the fingers. When the end 127 of the lever moves to the left, the fingers 105 and the plate 96 are withdrawn from the blank 94, and grippers 122, which are pivoted to a part 115 capable of sliding with the shaft 99, are turned by a link 119 so as to seize the end of the bottle. The continued motion to the left of the end 127 of the lever causes a sliding collar 111 to engage a collar 125 carried by the shaft 99, thus moving the shaft 99 to the left and withdrawing the bottle from the form 32. A collapsible bottle form, such as that described in Specification 28,830/10, may be used.

Class 94(i) A machine for closing a carton, of the type having hinged closure flaps one of which is folded and pasted down upon a previously folded flap or flaps, has means for feeding the carton through the machine in a direction at right-angles to the hinging axis of its final closure flap with said flap in a forwardly extended position to engage and displace pivoted wiper means, which in the continued travel of the carton turn the flap about its hinge and close it upon the carton where it is secured by adhesive previously applied to the underside of the flap. A carton, as described in Specification 661,754 with a closure flap b and side gussets b<SP>1</SP> folded inwardly, is placed, with a final closing flap c, which has side lugs c<SP>1</SP>, extending forwardly, on a table 1 and moved forwardly under a plate 3. The table 1 may be replaced by a horizontal endless conveyer band. The carton is moved between spring-urged endless belts 4 which take it beneath a pasting roller 6. As the flap c passes under the roller 6 it engages a flap member 9 carried by radial arms 9c loosely mounted on the shaft of the roller 6, the lugs c<SP>1</SP> passing over arcuate side plates 8 and under the edges of the roller 6. The flap c lifts up the member 9 which, as the carton passes from the pasting roller 6, drops back again to press the flap c on to the top of the carton. Driven and adjustable bevel wheels 11 press the lugs c<SP>1</SP> against the sides of the carton and the lugs are held thereagainst by endless bands 14, as the carton passes beneath a heated plate 15 to set the adhesive. The flap member 9 may be pressed downwardly by a weak spring and may carry a roller for smoothing the carton top. Cartons as described in Specification 656,401 or cartons having no ride lugs may be closed in the machine.
