Any droplets that are not deflected onto a substrate during printing are collected in a gutter 2 and are recycled to the reservoir 3 of the ink flow system. The ink droplets are removed from the gutter by suction applied thereto by a controlled solenoid valve 13. The suction may be varied, pulsed or interrupted. The ink is sucked from the gutter through the valve 13 via a duct 14 to a venturi pump 11 and then returned to the reservoir 3. The operation of the valve may be modified in response to any ambient temperature and pressure changes detected by a sensor 30. Other valves suitable for use include rotary, gate, butterfly, flap or similar types.

A first relatively low-volume, high pressure ink handling loop or circuit routes ink to an ink jet printhead for directing one or more columns of ink toward a printing medium. A second relatively high volume yet low-pressure loop or circuit routes ink through a number of processing stations which, for example, include ink de-aeration, filtration, and temperature control. The bulk of the processing is performed in this second loop, yet limited processing steps are also performed in the high-pressure, low-volume circuit which directs ink to the printhead. As ink is lost due to evaporation and/or printing on the print medium, the ink is replenished via an ink source which is coupleable to a main ink tank forming a portion of the high-volume ink handling loop.

A phase change ink printer may be operated so that multiple pressure pulses are applied to the ink in an ink flow path of the printer during a time that the ink is changing phase. During the phase change, a portion of the ink in the ink flow path is in liquid phase and another portion of the ink is in solid phase. The pressure pulses are applied at least to the liquid phase ink in the ink flow path. The phase change may involve a transition from solid to liquid phase, such as during a start-up operation, or may involve a transition from a liquid phase to a solid phase, such as during a power down operation. In an inkjet printer, an ink reclamation apparatus receives ink emitted from at least one printhead. The ink reclamation apparatus includes an ink receptacle and a liquid path member that extends from the ink receptacle to contact the face of at least one printhead proximate to a plurality of inkjets in the at least one printhead. The liquid path member draws liquid ink from the plurality of inkjets and the liquid ink enters the ink receptacle. The ink reclamation apparatus returns the ink to a reservoir in the printhead and reduces or eliminates wasted ink during operation of the at least one printhead.
