An alignment mark on a light-emitting diode (LED) array chip is formed together with the light-emitting areas of the diodes in the array, by use of a combined mask having a first part and a second part. An impurity is introduced through windows in the first part to form the light-emitting areas. Next the windows are covered with an etching resist, and the chip substrate is etched to create a topographic relief feature defined by the second part of the mask. This topographic relief feature is used as an alignment mark. When LED array chips having these alignment marks are mounted on a supporting surface, they are aligned by recognizing patterns of light reflected from the topographic relief, thereby detecting the positions of the alignment marks.

A printing apparatus includes a transport roller that transports the recording paper from a paper roll in a transport direction, a print head that ejects ink onto the recording paper, an ink supply portion that supplies the ink to the print head, a cutting mechanism that is provided downstream of the print head in the transport direction of the recording paper and that cuts the recording paper, and a control portion that controls the transport of the recording paper in a direction opposite to the transport direction in such a manner that, after the recording paper is cut, a leading end portion of the recording paper reaches a position of the print head from a position of the cutting mechanism, wherein the ink supply portion extends from a region downstream of the print head in the transport direction of the recording paper and is coupled to the print head. 1. A printing apparatus comprising:a transport roller configured to pull out recording paper from a paper roll and transport the recording paper in a transport direction;a print head configured to eject ink onto the recording paper;an ink supply portion configured to supply the ink to the print head;a cutting mechanism provided downstream of the print head in the transport direction of the recording paper and configured to cut the recording paper; anda control portion configured to control the transport of the recording paper in a direction opposite to the transport direction in such a manner that, after the recording paper is cut, a leading end portion of the recording paper pulled out from the paper roll reaches a position of the print head from a position of the cutting mechanism, whereinthe ink supply portion extends from a region downstream of the print head in the transport direction of the recording paper and is coupled to the print head.2. PURPOSE:To obtain a clear printing blurring of character or the like when printing is performed with the depression of a dead key by moving a carriage initially to a necessary amount and then, to the specified position before feeding a ribbon. CONSTITUTION:When a dead key for ''Umlaut'' or the like is operated, after the printing, a carriage 13 is moved once by one character width in the direction of feeding characters. A ribbon 19 is fed by one character width so that the new part thereof reaches the printing position. Upon the end of the stepping movement of the carriage 13, an electromagnet 18 is demagnetized and a cassette holder 15 returns to move the carriage 13 by one character width in the opposite direction this time. In this case, the feeding of the ribbon is not performed because of the rise of a clutch shaft. After the returning of the carriage 13 to the ''Umlaut'' printing position, with the operation of the corresponding character key, a selected character is printed. Thereafter, the carriage is moved by one character in the direction of feeding characters.

May 1, 1919 Type-lever machines; accenting-arrangements; types.-In machines in which the type-levers operate a universal bar for con. trolling the letter-spacing mechanism, the type-levers that carry accent-types operate an interponent which can be so adjusted as to operate or to silence the universal bar. The interponent may be controlled by the shift mechanism, in which case certain of the type-levers are provided with an uppercase accent-type and a lower-case character-type, or vice versa. Preferably, the accent-types 88 are, as shown in Fig. 4, formed as upper-case characters on L- shaped blocks which are formed also with lower-case character-types 86, the accenttypes being offset one letter space to the left in order that the accents may be printed after the letters. The L-shaped blocks may, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 4, be arranged in a nested group at the right-hand side of the basket and be operated by keys 34<a>. A similar group of L-shaped blocks provided with upper-case character-types and lower-case accent-types, especially for subscribed accents, may be arranged at the left-hand side of the basket. The interponent 70, shown in rear view in Fig. 2 and in section in Fig. 3, consists of a sector which is mounted on a screw 76 on the type-lever segment 23 and is formed with an offset flange 73 arranged in a recess 72 in the segment and a recess 68, Fig. 5, at the right-hand end of the universal bar 37. The interponent is formed with four slots 74 which are at the same distance apart as the radial slots 22 in the segment. ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus for representing characters employ a print-ing unit to print symbols which correspond to characters, the characters being represented either by individual printed signals or by two or more symbols printed in sequence or two or more overstruck symbols. The charac-ters to be printed are encoded into one or more data words, each data word having a code word associated therewith which is stored in one of three mem-ories which serve to address the printing unit to represent a particular symbol or symbols. If a character is encoded by a single data word, this single data word is supplied to a first memory and if the corresponding code word is contained in the first memory, the code word is released to the printing unit and the symbol is printed. If the corresponding code word is not contained in the first memory, an address word for a second memory is read from the first memory, this address word containing the code words and associated positioning words for the character. If the character is repre-sented by more than one data word, the data words comprising the character are supplied to a third memory. If a corresponding code word is contained in the third memory, this is released to the printing unit, and if a corres-ponding code word is not contained in the third memory, the data words for the character are supplied sequentially to the first or second memory.
