The method of preparing the printing plate begins by applying a photosensitive liquid coating to the substrate, digitally imaging the coated substrate, using an actinic light source to polymerize portions of the liquid coating in accordance with the imaging, and washing the liquid coating with an aqueous solution after the imaging to remove unpolymerized portions of the liquid coating. The typical constraints on coatings for offset lithographic plates are removed by utilizing sticky or wet layers as coatings so that little or no binder is present to interfere with the sensitivity or ease of processing.

A printing form precursor comprises a printing surface which comprises an inorganic metal compound, the printing surface being hydrophobic and capable of being made hydrophilic by energy but capable of becoming hydrophobic again, for reuse, if desired. An associated method of printing includes steps of subjecting the printing surface imagewise to energy so as to locally increase its hydrophilicity sufficient to make the surface differentiated in its acceptance of an oxophilic a printing ink; applying the ink to the printing surface and printing from the printing surface; causing or allowing the printing surface to undergo a reduction in hydrophilicity sufficient again to make the printing surface uniform in its acceptance of a printing ink; and,if wished, repeating these steps on multiple occasions. Thus the invention achieves the goal of providing a printing form precursor which does not need a chemical developer, and which can be used multiple times, to print different images.

The resulting ink compositions can be used in web-offset lithographic printing to substantially reduce or eliminate the ink feedback and ink build-up that occurs during printing. According to the above method, the hydrophilic protective layer can be applied by coating a solution by means a spray nozzle or a jet nozzle and wherein the applied hydrophilic protective layer improves clean-out in an on-press development.

Application : protection des plaques d'aluminium contre l'oxydation, tout en évitant les problèmes d'absorption d'air et de moussage rencontrés avec les solutions de gomme arabique non traitées. The process of the invention comprises the following steps: a) mixing an aqueous solution of gum arabic with an inorganic acid, so as to obtain a pH of about 2.0 or less; b) the solution is heated to a temperature just below its boiling point, until a viscosity of about 1.5 to 10 cP is obtained; c) the pH is raised to about 3 to 10.5 by means of a compatible basic substance; suitable; d) a suitable preservative is added; e) a compatible surfactant is added; and f) separating the suspended particles from the mixture. Application: protection of aluminum plates against oxidation, while avoiding the problems of air absorption and foaming encountered with untreated gum arabic solutions.

ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A lithographic fountain solution concentrate is disclosed, the essential components of which comprises an aqueous mixture of: a) from about 0.1 to about 1.5 percent by weight of a water soluble film forming hydrophilic gum; b) from about 0.75 to about 8.5 percent by weight of Polyvinyl Pyrrolidone; c) from about 5.0 to about 30.0 percent by weight of a water soluble acid etchant; d) from about 20.0 to about 50.0 percent by weight of a water soluble or water miscible glycol; and e) from about 0.01 to about 1.25 percent by weight of a phosphate/phosphoric acid buffer system. The concentrate is adapted for further dilution by water to yield a fountain solution which when used in the printing process offers decreased scumming and blinding of printing plates while at the same time permitting a reduction in the amount of water applied to the plate. Improved print quality, reduced tendency to wet the paper, faster ink drying and improved ink/water balance is thereby achieved.

Offset prints are produced by using an aq. hydrophilising bath contg. (a) 5-60 g/l of >=1 multi-nuclear metal complex contg. Zn, Ir, Co, Ti, Fe, Cu, Ni, Pt, Mn, Ru, Rh, He, V or Be as nucleating metal, bonded to >=1 ligand, consisting of O, O2, F, CL, Br, NH, NH2, NO2, SO4 or AcO, (b) 5-100 g/l phosphate, and (c) an inorganic acid. The baths can be applied to electrophotographic and direct image printing plates. The baths have high hydrophilising capacity; quickly form a strong, hydrophilic film; resist light and heat and cause no health hazards. The complexes form hydrophilising salts which are solid, stable and difficultly soluble in water in the presence of metal ions. The combination of phosphate and metal complex improved water retention and printing ink repulsion.
