A knee airbag installed in a lower portion of an instrument panel has a deployed condition wherein it extends rearward and upward. The airbag has a left lobe, a right lobe, and a central portion between and joined to the left and right lobes. A vent is formed in the reaction surface of each of the lobes to allow inflation gasses to escape from the airbag when, during a crash event, an occupant force applied forwardly against the lobes is below a threshold level. When the occupant force reaches or exceeds the threshold level, the vents are urged against the instrument panel to substantially block the escape of inflation gasses. The threshold level is selected such that a child-sized occupant standing forward of a desired passenger seating position exerts less than the threshold level.

Provided is an airbag apparatus capable of adjusting deployment pressure of an airbag. To this end, an airbag apparatus according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention includes: an airbag which is inflated when gas flows into the airbag, and has a vent hole through which the gas flowing into the airbag is discharged; a vent cover which is disposed outside the airbag; and a tether which penetrates the vent hole and pulls the vent cover while being tightened as the airbag is inflated so that the vent cover shields the vent hole.

An airbag comprising:a panel including a first lobe and a second lobe connected at a spine and affixed to each other along a seam;an inflation chamber defined between the first lobe and the second lobe;the first lobe having a tab extending from and transverse to a perimeter of the first lobe, the tab being connected to the second lobe; anda vent on the tab in communication with the inflation chamber.2. The airbag as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the first lobe and the second lobe are integral with each other at the spine.3. The airbag as set forth in claim 1 , wherein the seam extends along the perimeter of the first lobe and along the tab.4. The airbag as set forth in claim 3 , wherein the second lobe has a perimeter and the seam extends along the perimeter of the second lobe.5. The airbag as set forth in claim 4 , wherein the second lobe defines a cutout extending transverse to the perimeter of the second lobe claim 4 , the tab being connected to the second lobe along the cutout.6. An airbag assembly comprising:an airbag cushion inflatable by a gas from a stowed position to a fully deployed position, the airbag cushion defining at least one opening configured to allow at least a portion of the gas to exit the airbag cushion, the at least one opening having a first area; andat least one panel attached to the airbag cushion and positioned over at least a portion of the at least one opening such that the at least one panel partially obstructs the at least one opening.2. The airbag assembly of wherein the at least one panel is formed of a non-permeable membrane and reduces the first area of the at least one opening.3. The airbag assembly of wherein the reduction of the first area ranges from 30% to 50%.4. The airbag assembly of wherein the at least one panel defines at least one slot having a second area that is smaller than the first area of the at least one opening.5. A gas generator includes: a pressurized gas chamber formed by a cylindrical pressurized gas chamber housing filled with a pressurized gas; a combustion chamber connected to a first end portion of the pressurized gas chamber and including an ignition device and a gas generating agent therein, a diffuser portion connected to a second end portion of the pressurized gas chamber and provided with a gas discharge port; a first rupturable plate blocking a first communication passage between the pressurized gas chamber and the combustion chamber; a second rupturable plate blocking a second communication passage between the pressurized gas chamber and the diffuser portion; and a filter disposed and positioned in the pressurized gas chamber to cover the second rupturable plate, allowing, during actuation, the combustion gas from the combustion chamber and the pressurized gas to pass therethrough and be discharged therefrom in response to rupturing the second rupturable plate. 1.
