There is a clutch (3) between the axle sections which couples them together when desired.Between the adjustable pump (9) driven by the engine (10) and the hydraulic motors is a valve (8) connecting the latter in parallel or series with the pump as desired. On changing over from series to parallel, a selector rod acting on the pump-adjusting unit ensures that the maximum speeds of the two motors are the same. The valve can have a steering control system allowing throttling or stopping of one or the motors when connected in series, thus steering the tractor or assisting with the steering.

A steering control system for a tracked vehicle includes a spring centered steering wheel which is rotatable in both directions to endstops. A steering control unit executes a transitional counter-rotation (TCR) mode algorithm which disables steering or counter-rotation when the gear lever moves from park to neutral or from park to neutral to gear while the clutch is disengaged. Steering function can be re-enabled by turning the steering wheel to its centered position and then turning the steering wheel in either direction away from its centered position, or by turning steering wheel towards one of its endstop positions (without centering the steering wheel). If steering or counter-rotating is enabled the second way, then during a transition period the turning rate as a function of the position of the steering wheel will be less than that of normal operation. If the steering wheel is then held at the endstop position, the control system will automatically and gradually increase the rate of turning (by increasing an electronic steering gain value) until full normal turning rate capability is attained.

An omni direction vehicle with a frame having a round surface about its perimeter with no apparatus mounted on the frame extending beyond the perimeter. Two independent drive wheels located on an axis through the center of the frame are mounted at the same distance from a central vertical axis through the frame. Each wheel is powered independently of the other and can rotate at variable speeds in either direction. The vehicle is capable of movement in any direction by rotating the axis of the drive wheels to a position which is perpendicular to the desired direction of travel. The vehicle can spin about its vertical axis such that the axis of the drive wheels can be oriented at any direction without changing the original footprint of the space that the frame occupies over the ground. Thus, the vehicle requires a zero turning radius and requires only the space it occupies to change its forward orientation.
