The two-way valve may be used on thermo-weldable sachets contg. foods and is closed when pressures inside (A) the sachet balance those outside (B). The valve comprises twin co-axial cups (14, 15) mounted in opposition on a partition plate cum mounting flange (9). Each cup is covered by a floating flexible obturator disc (18, 19) within an axially adjustable perforated cap (22, 23). The base of the resp. cups is traversed by an inclined hole (16, 17) which communicates with the exterior on the opposite side of the partition (9). The caps (22, 23) can be displaced onto the cups (14, 15) wedging the obturator discs (18, 19) on the cup rims and closing the valve passages concerned. The caps may inc. a conical projection (28) and an intermediate circular rib (31) which deform the obturator and promote the seal.

A self-venting cover 1 for a heatable food package features a sheet of film 3 having a slit 5 formed therein to permit the passage of steam therethrough. A label 4 is secured to the film 3 which controls the flow of steam through the opening, the label 4 having a sheet of material having a first region 7 secured to the film in an area remote from the slit 5 and having a second elongated 6 region covering the slit 5. The elongated region 6 is only partially secured to the film 3 and forms a vent passage 11, 12 between the unsecured portion 10 of the elongated region 6 and the film 3 itself which vent passage 11, 12 extends from the slit 5 towards the periphery of the label to permit controlled venting of steam from the opening.

A dough product (20) suitable for storage by refrigeration or freezing that includes a package (22) constructed as a chub from a substantially gas impermeable material closed at opposite ends (29, 30) around a dough portion (24) containing at least flour, a liquid, and a leavening system. The leavening system at least partially proofs the dough after insertion into and closing of the package, such that the dough (24) expands to a volume substantially equal to the volume of the package (22) and has a high raw specific volume. Opposing surfaces of the first and second film layers form a substantially gastight seal therebetween upon contact of the film layers. Offset first film layer and second film layer apertures extend through the first and second film layers, respectively, the first film layer aperture being in fluid communication with an exterior side of the valve strip and the second film layer aperture being configured to be in fluid communication with the container aperture.

A one-way valve is mounted over a vent hole in a flexible package to enable gases to vent. The valve has a flexible base layer, a flexible cover layer and an interposed layer of oil. Each layer has an opposed pair of side edges. The cover layer is thinner than the base layer and is secured to the base layer along respective contiguous portions of the side edges to form an openable channel. The oil layer is located in the channel between the base layer and the cover layer and over the hole to form a bond holding the cover layer on the base layer until pressure within the package causes the bond to break, whereupon the cover layer to lift ups and opens the hole valve. Methods of making the package and valve are also disclosed.

The present invention relates to a multi-layer control device and method of making that may be attached to a receptacle that provides a hermetic and/or water, fluid resistant seal but allows for the expulsion of air pressure from the interior of a receptacle. The multi-layer control device, more specifically a valve, has a fluid layer such as a low viscosity fluid that is applied during the manufacturing of the valve and incorporated into the layer of the valve. The valve includes a base layer that is provided over a first adhesive layer, a second adhesive layer is provided over the base layer, a fluid layer, a third adhesive layer and a cover layer. The second adhesive and fluid layers are discontinuous and are applied to the perimeter of the base layer, respectively. The base layer, first adhesive layer, and material layer have at least one aperture to facilitate the release of gas or fluid from the interior of a receptacle.

Disclosed herein is a beverage packaging configuration whereby mix and base beverages are packaged in a single package, and the base beverage containers are not filled completely with the base beverage. The space within each base beverage container remaining above the base beverage volume provides space in the base container for the correct proportion of at least one mix beverage to be poured into the base beverage container to create a reproducible mixed drink. One exemplary embodiment provides for a single mix beverage container which contains a volume of mix beverage equally divisible between the volume remaining in a plurality of base beverage containers. Another exemplary embodiment includes more than one mix beverage container which may contain different mix beverages. A gastight valve strip for a reclosable container includes first and second film layers adapted to be disposed over an aperture through a sidewall of a reclosable container. The second film layer opposes the first and includes an attachment surface adapted to be sealed to the sidewall of the container. The attachment surface has a patterned portion that defines a region of flow channels. Opposing surfaces of the first and second film layers form a substantially gastight seal therebetween upon contact of the first and second film layers to each other. A first film layer aperture extends through the first film layer, and is in fluid communication with an exterior side of the valve strip. A second film layer aperture extends through the second film layer, is offset and spaced apart from the first film layer aperture, and is in fluid communication with the container aperture through the patterned portion.

Hermetically sealed Microwave Package and Process

A microwavable package is formed with venting mechanisms that are arranged in one of a number of different ways, and are covered with a pressure sensitive adhesive label. While the vents are covered with the pressure sensitive adhesive label, the package is hermetically sealed. The label protects the venting mechanisms from breakage due to product mishandling and abuses during storage and transportation. Prior to be cooked the consumer will remove or peel back the pressure sensitive adhesive label exposing or opening the venting mechanisms. Such vents can be of multiple different shapes, including a perforated shape whose center portion is removed or center portions sticks to the pressure sensitive adhesive label when the label is pulled back and removed from the package. The package is then placed in the oven or microwave and the product inside can be cooked safely. This method guarantees a reliable, safe designed, steam release and cook-in-the-bag mechanism that will always deliver a controllable process from the freezer to the table.

One-way valve

A one-way valve to control the release of pressurized gas from within a sealed container through a venting aperture. The valve comprises a layer of flexible material having an upper and a lower surface with a portion of the upper surface adhered to a surface of the container and overlaying the venting aperture. A channel is defined by a portion of the container and an adjacent portion of the flexible material which has not been adhered to the container. The channel is in communication with the venting aperture and an exhaust gas aperture in the layer of flexible material. The channel is operable between a closed and an open configuration upon gas pressure within the container exceeding a predetermined limit. When open the channel permits gas to flow from said container into the exterior atmosphere. When closed the channel restricts the flow of gas between the venting aperture and exhaust gas aperture.

A stretch blow moulded container such as a keg has a neck 3 fitted with a cap 4 to retain pressurised contents within the container. A miniature pressure relief valve (PRV) 30 - 33 is contained within the wall thickness of the neck to release gases on the occurrence of an overpressure event. The PRV may incorporate a bursting element, which renders the containers unusable, or a spring-loaded seal 30 which re-seals after the release of excess pressure. The PRV may also be permanently changed to an open condition by removal of the cap, preventing re-use of the container.

System and Method for Heating Items

A heating element is contained within a resealable heating bag. At least one degassing valve is embedded in the surface of the heating bag, providing for a way for steam to be released from the interior of the bag. The heating element comprises powdered aluminum, calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, calcium dihydroxide, sodium carbonate and sodium hydroxide that is reacted with water in a two stage chemical reaction to create heat within the heating bag. The element and the heat generated by the heating element is transferred to a packaged food item placed within the heating bag, thereby heating the food item to a desired temperature. The timing and the heat/pressure level of the cooking process inside the sealed bag can be controlled by correlating the interior space of the heating bag and the size of the element and number of degassing valves embedded in the surface of the heating bag.

One-way pressure relief valves with wetting fluid reservoirs are disclosed. Valves of the types described herein may be applied to a product package, for example a package containing dry roasted coffee, to allow gas to escape from the package while preventing entry of ambient air into the package. A wetting fluid is provided within the valve to facilitate formation of the seal blocking entry of ambient air through the valve and into the product package. The wetting fluid reservoirs hold wetting fluid to limit or prevent leakage of the wetting fluid from the valve providing benefits such as improved application of the valves to the packages, improved retention of the valves to the packages, and appearance improvements resulting from avoidance of leakage of wetting fluid onto the valve and the package to which the valve is attached. 1. A package for a food product can include a single film formable using, e.g., flow-wrapping, to enclose the food product. At least one portion of the single film may be made up of an absorbent material laminated to the single film, the absorbent material adapted to absorb moisture within the package. The at least one portion may be utilized as a base upon which the food product can be placed. Fins or overlapping seals may be configured on at least two edges of the single film allowing a fin seal or overlapping seal to be created thereby further allowing the single film to substantially enclose the food product. Crimped seals may further be employed to completely seal the food product within the single film. The fin seal or the overlapping seal and the crimped seals may be self-venting to release accumulated steam/moisture during a cooking or preparation process.

Containers are disclosed, as well as multilayer films used in such containers, which advantageously maintain a high seal strength even after being subjected to hot-fill conditions for sterilization. These microwavable/ovenable containers () and multilayer films are also beneficially self-venting upon exposure to microwave heating when the internal container pressure exceeds a threshold value. These self-venting containers are also automatically self-sealing after the self-venting feature has ruptured and the container has cooled to room temperature. The self-venting self-sealing nature of these containers arises from particular film and sealing characteristics, in which the seal width differs in defined, self-venting self-sealing seal regions (A), relative to non-venting seal regions (B) of a given peripheral seal. A packaging container is manufactured in which an internal space for storing contents is formed by a laminate film. A circumferential end part of the laminate film is subjected to a thermal fusion treatment to form a sealed portion. A first slit having a predetermined length is formed in the laminate film so as to intersect a part of the sealed portion. A second adhesive layer is disposed in a region having a predetermined width in a neighborhood of the first slit. Thus, through a simple constructions, leakage can be prevented in the packaging container, and breakage of the packaging container and flying-out of the contents accompanying a pressure rise in the inside of the container can be prevented when warming the contents together with the container body.

An ovenable cooking apparatus for facilitating the cooking of food components while maintaining the separateness thereof may include a first container for holding a first food component, and a second container for holding a second food component. The separation of the first food component from the second food component maintains the surface area for the first and second food components to facilitate heating of the first and second food components. A regulating apparatus for a pressure activated one-way valve , the one-way valve for mounting on a container to permit the release of gas from within the container and to control the ingress of atmospheric air into the container , the regulating apparatus comprising:a sealed and expandable chamber containing a gas, said chamber operatively associated with the one-way valve such that when said chamber is exposed to elevated temperatures and/or reduced external pressure said gas within said chamber expanding and exerting a force upon the one-way valve or portions thereof, said force tending to maintain the one-way valve in a closed or semi-closed configuration.2. VALVE AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME

A method of making a one-way gas release valve for releasing gas pressure from within a coffee container comprises pre-oiling a relatively narrow dry strap of flexible material and laminating the pre-oiled dry strap between relatively wide ribbons of base and cover material with the dry strap overlying spaced vent patterns in the base material. Alternatively, the base material may be pre-oiled or both the base material and the dry strap may be pre-oiled. The dry strap and base may be made of PET and the cover may be made of mPET. Gas release valves are then die cut from the resulting web with each valve containing a vent pattern. Pre-oiling of the dry strap and/or the base can be accomplished through a roll metered process to insure that the oil is applied in precise amounts and with consistent thickness and coverage. Since the oil is applied during fabrication of the gas release valves, the vent patterns in the base can be configured to function also as a filter to prevent coffee grinds from migrating into the valve. 1. A method of making valves comprising:(a) forming a first pre-lamination having a width;(b) forming a second pre-lamination having a width;(c) applying oil to one face of a dry strap having a width less that the width of the first and second pre-laminations;(d) laminating the other face of the dry strap to the first pre-lamination;(e) laminating the second pre-lamination to the first pre-lamination to sandwich the dry strap between the pre-laminations and form a finished lamination; and(f) cutting the finished lamination at intervals into valves.2.
