A supply of stock material for a dunnage conversion machine includes two plies of sheet stock material wound into a roll or fan-folded into a stack. Each ply has disposed on a corresponding leading or trailing end thereof an adhesive layer and a removable release liner covering the adhesive layer. In particular embodiments, the torque transmitting means comprise side clamping mechanisms that engage only the end surfaces of the parent rolls. In other embodiments, an automated off-line method for splicing tissue webs from different parent rolls utilizes a finishing unit that substantially continuously impacts each web during unwinding to splice the webs together. In one aspect, a method of making and processing high bulk tissue webs is disclosed for the production of a soft, high bulk uncreped throughdried tissue web by depositing an aqueous suspension of paper-making fibers onto an endless forming fabric to form a web and drying the web by throughdrying to final dryness without any significant differential compression to form a dried web having a bulk value of about 15 to 25 cubic centimeters per gram or greater, an MD Stiffness Factor of 50 to 100 kilograms, a machine direction stretch of 15 to 25 percent, and a substantially uniform density.

The invention is concerned with a system for processing fabrics or webs continuously, especially useful for applying and drying resins or other chemicals on glass fiber cloth. The system includes an upstream-located unwinding unit (1) which incorporates a semiautomatic splicing assembly for splicing the terminating or trailing end of a fabric or web (2) oncoming from an unwound roll (27) to the forward or leading end of a fabric or web (2) on a roll (27) to be unwound. The unwinding unit (1) is followed by a first multiple deflector and take-up roller set whence the fabric or web (2) is transferred to a station of application of a resin or other processing material. The application station feeds a hot air drying kiln (13), where the resin is dried. At the processing kiln outlet end, there are provided a hot finishing roll assembly followed by a second multiple deflector and take-up roller set. The latter is adapted to feed a winding unit (15) for the processed fabric or web (2).

The controller 58 is also effective to actuate the drive 29. During splicing the web is fed to a processing machine (not shown) from a web accumulator (not shown). The splice can be eliminated in the processing by a signal 59 applied to the associated splice eliminator having a shift register.

The end of the new reel is thus pulled free of its retaining clips and drawn out as required. The retaining clamps are pivoted upwards for insertion of the tape ends, and downwards again before use. The tape is suitably tensioned before joining. The whole machine is mounted on rollers and guides to permit lateral movement.

WEB SPLICING APPARATUS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A splicing head for an automatic zero-speed web splicing machine is disclosed in which the end of a new roll of web material can be prepared for splicing directly on resilient nip rollers which are used by the machine to perform the splicing operation. In particular, the splicing head includes a knife carriage through which the web material passes and which can be moved transversly to the web travel direction under control of a cam and lever arrangement to introduce a predetermined loop of slack into the web material. The action of the cam and lever mechanism also positions a serrated preparation blade mounted on cantilever arms in front of the nip rollers for squarely trimming the edge of the web material. After the web material has been trimmed the preparation blade can be moved by the cam and lever arrangement to an out-of-the-way position to allow preparation of the web material and to prevent interference with the splicing machine as the web material runs through the machine after the splice has been made.

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A control system for a web-feeding machine used to provide a continuous supply of material having successive labels and registration marks printed serially thereon is disclosed. The machine has an assembly for splicing the material from a ready web and the material severed from a running web wherein the response of the assembly after being actuated is delayed by a response time T. The control system comprises a driving circuit having an input and an output electro-mechanically coupled to the splicing assembly actuated thereby in response to a signal applied to the input thereof, a scanner positioned adjacent the material to provide a signal in response to the presence of a registration mark, and an encoder for providing a fixed number of pulses proportional to a corresponding length of the moving material. The control system also comprises a control circuit connected to the scanner, the encoder and the input of the driving circuit. The control circuit counts the number of encoder pulses between successive scanner signals and then decrements from that number to zero and, responsive to a scanner signal, provides a time delay To preset to approximate the response time T and decrements to zero from a preset number D after the time delay To has expired. The control circuit also provides a splice signal SS and supplies a splice-command signal SC to the input of the driving circuit in response to the splice signal SS.
