The present invention relates to an improved level wind arm for a winch drum assembly, and a winch drum assembly incorporating such a level wind arm. The level wind arm includes a cross member adapted to bias against an outwardly extending portion of rope, the cross member being concave so that more force is required for the rope spindle associated with the cross member to “climb” the slope of the cross member, causing a momentary pause in motion of the spindle after it reaches the end of wind stroke. This momentary pause allows for rope being wound onto the drum to rise up the end wall of the drum to create a new layer which is aligned and consistent with the layer below, without causing gaps in the rope or other circumstances which could lead to the rope accumulating at any one point, or becoming tangled. The present invention also includes means of ensuring that tension is maintained in the rope, and that the rope does not jump off the reel and, for example, into the clutch mechanism.

A level winding drum winch has a frame within which a rotatable drum is mounted. The frame is supported upon a pair of tracks upon which the frame may be slid from side to side. A motor connected to the drum rotates the drum for winding or paying out a cable wrapped around the drum. A feed screw attached within the frame is actuated by the motor to slide the frame from side to side as the cable is wound upon the drum. Thus, the cable is continuously directed at a substantially perpendicular angle, without bending or kinking, towards or away from the drum thereby forming a level winding and avoiding damage to the cable. The winch is particularly useful in handling relatively fragile composite cables useful for simultaneously towing and electronically communicating data with the objects towed by a boat.

A lifting device , comprising:a first drum around which a wire is wound;a first motor that rotates the first drum;a second drum around which the wire fed from the first drum is wound; anda second motor that rotates the second drum, wherein the first motor is driven to rotate the first drum so as to lift the wire, and the second motor is driven to rotate the second drum so as to reel the wire fed from the first drum.2. The lifting device according to claim 1 , wherein the first motor has a higher output than an output of the second motor claim 1 , and driving of the first motor is controlled in accordance with a command signal from a control device.3. The lifting device according to claim 1 , wherein the second motor is driven with an output at which a tension of the wire reeled by the second drum becomes equal to or less than a predetermined reference value.4. The lifting device according to claim 1 , wherein:the wire is wound around the first drum in a single layer; andthe wire is wound around the second drum in multiple layers.5. The lifting device according to claim 1 , further comprising a traverser that supports the wire between the first drum and the second drum and guides the wire to the second drum.6. An apparatus and method for pulling a drill string out from a wellbore and lowering the drill string back into the wellbore, with minimal or no disassembly of the drill string, are provided. The apparatus has a first tension mechanism, a second tension mechanism, an up-hole cable, a down-hole cable and a guide. To pull a drill string out from a wellbore, the up-hole cable is connected to an up-hole end of the drill string and the drill string is pulled upwardly into and through the guide. To lower the drill string into the wellbore, the down-hole cable is connected to the mid-section (and/or the up-hole end) of the drill string and the drill string is pulled downwardly from the guide back into the wellbore.
