Hydrogen halide is eliminated from a compound containing a halogen atom a or b to a carbonyl group, defined to include an aldehyde, ketone or carboxylic acid, ester or amide group, or to an ethylene, acetylene or cyano group by reaction, preferably in the presence of a solvent, between 0 DEG to 200 DEG C., with 1,5-diazobicyclo-[4,3,0] - non - 5 - ene, 1,4 - diazabicyclo - [3,3,0]-oct - 4 - ene, 1,5 - diazabicyclo - [4,5,0] - undec-5 - ene, 1,5 - diaza - 8 - methyl - [4,4,0] - dec-5-ene. The halogen may be chlorine, bromine or iodine. Between 1 to 3 gm. mols. of dehydrohalogenating agent per gram atom of halogen may be employed, an excess may be used as solvent. Specified solvents include hydrocarbons, ethers, acetonitrile, dimethyl formamide. The examples include the synthesis of Vitamin A acetate; 2,7 - dicadienyne - (9) - acid methyl ester - (1); trans, trans - 1 - phenylhexadiene - (1,3) - yne(5); trans - 1 - phenylbutene - (1) - yne (3); tridecene - (10) - yne (12) acid methyl ester ...
