The present invention is directed to a copolymer capable of forming a water- and oil-repellent agent that enables binding to textiles and other materials without the production of formaldehyde. The copolymer according to the present invention comprises a) a fluoroaliphatic radical-containing agent, (b) stearyl (meth)acrylate; (c) a chlorine-containing compound; and (d) a monomer selected from those that contain an anhydride functional group or are capable of forming an anhydride functional group. A method for removing volatile components from an ethylene polymer effluent stream from an ethylene polymerization reactor , the method comprising: the pressure is reduced to a range from about 2 to about 200 psig, and', 'the polymer solids have a solids temperature from about 10° F. to about 50° F. less than a reaction temperature in the ethylene polymerization reactor;, '(i) reducing a pressure of the effluent stream to remove a first portion of the volatile components from polymer solids, wherein(ii) fluidizing the polymer solids while heating to increase the solids temperature from at least about 10° F. above the solids temperature in step (i) and up to about 20° F. greater than the reaction temperature, and wherein a second portion of the volatile components are removed; and(iii) contacting the polymer solids with a stripping gas to remove a third portion of the volatile components to form a polymer solids stream containing less than 40 ppm by weight (ppmw) of volatile components.22. A thermoplastic resin such as a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer is treated to remove volatile impurities such as unreacted styrene by admixing with a chemical blowing agent and extruding under a vacuum. The chemical blowing agent is converted into an inert gas such as carbon dioxide during extrusion; the gas evolved is removed, together with the volatile impurities, through one or more vents in the extruder. The use of a chemical blowing agent, rather than the inert gas itself, permits the facile distribution of the CO 2 stripping agent throughout the molten thermoplastic resin using commonly available extruders without the need for elaborate gas injection means.

Manufacture of low-emission polymer emulsion paints, coatings and plasters in the form of aqueous preparations based on aqueous dispersions of copolymers of olefinically unsaturated monomers wherein the pigment volume concentration (PVC) is not less than 60% and which contain water, fillers, pigments, emulsion copolymers and customary assistants, the emulsion copolymers containing from 0.05 to 2% by weight of monomer units from specific unsaturated hydrolysable organic silicon compounds and the aqueous copolymer dispersions having a minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT) of <10 DEG C, preferably <5 DEG C, in particular <2 DEG C. The aqueous preparations according to the invention contain <0.1% by weight of non-aqueous volatiles, based on the total non-volatile content of the preparations, and the pH of the aqueous preparations is within the range from 5.5 to 10. The low-emission aqueous preparations manufactured according to the invention are in particular free of volatile organic solvents, volatile organic film-forming aids, low molecular weight plasticisers, residual monomers from the emulsion copolymerisation, other, non- aqueous volatiles and malodorous by-products. Use of the emulsion-based paints, coatings and plasters as preservatives for structures and buildings or as building materials, in particular in inadequately ventilated and in inhabited rooms.
