A modified alkyd resin is prepared by heating together a polymerized rosin, a polycarboxylic acid, and a polyhydric alcohol. The polymerized rosin may be prepared from wood rosin, gum rosin, heat treated rosin, or a rosin acid, e.g. abietic acid, pimaric acid and sapinic acid. Specified polycarboxylic acids are phthalic, succinic, adipic, sebacic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic and citraconic acids, terpenemaleic anhydride condensates, and mixtures thereof. Specified polyhydric alcohols are glycerol, diglycerol, pentacrythritol, dipentaerythritol, sorbitol, mannitol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol and triethylene glycol. Dicyclopentadiene may be used under conditions such that it yields the monomer. The examples describe reacting maleic anhydride with glycerol and then reacting with ethyl alcohol, optionally with benzyl alcohol, and dicyclopentadiene. The modified unsaturated polyester may be coated on steel plates after addition of bitumen and the usual peroxide/accelerator systems.

Aqueous coating compositions are produced by treating a polyol having at least 3 hydroxy-groups and a molecular weight of at least 500 successively with (a) a drying oil fatty acid and (b) a maleinized fatty acid and partially or completely neutralizing the product with a base. Polyols specified include: a copolymer of styrene and allyl alcohol, and epoxy-resins, e.g. an epochlorohydrin/bisphenol A adduct. Drying oil fatty acids specified include those of linseed oil, soya bean oil, dehydrated castor oil and tall oil. 2 moles per mole of polyol may be used at 350-450 DEG F. Maleinized fatty acids specified include maleinized tall oil, and linseed oil. This treatment may be at 200-260 DEG F. for a sufficient time that half the maleic acid carboxyl groups are reacted. The neutralization may be at room temperature. Bases specified are ammonia, triethylamine, diethanolamine and diethylethanolamine. The fatty acid portion of the alkyd functions as an internal plasticizer. Crosslinking occurs through oxirane rings in both the anhydride and fatty acid moieties of the alkyd to produce hard, but not brittle films. Excellent water resistance is obtained without thermal post curing.

PURPOSE: Provided are an adhesion promoter additive containing unsaturated and amorphous polyester and application of the unsaturated and amorphous polyester as an adhesion promoter additive having improved adhesive ability and corrosion-resistance, high hardness and solid content, and excellent polishing property. Polyester polyols made from thermoplastic polyesters are disclosed. The polyols can be made by heating a thermoplastic polyester such as virgin PET, recycled PET, or mixtures thereof, with a glycol to give a digested intermediate, which is then condensed with a dimer fatty acid to give the polyol. The unsaturated polyester resin is prepared of the following raw materials in parts by mass: 50-90 parts of a prepolymer, 10-30 parts of phenylethylene, 5-15 parts of methyl methacrylate, and 5-15 parts of 1,3,5-triglycidyl isocyanurate. Polyester polyols made from thermoplastic polyesters are disclosed. The polyols can be made by heating a thermoplastic polyester such as virgin PET, recycled PET, or mixtures thereof, with a glycol to give a digested intermediate, which is then condensed with a dimer fatty acid to give the polyol. The invention includes a polyester polyol comprising recurring units of a glycol-digested thermoplastic polyester and a dimer fatty acid. High-recycle-content polyols having desirable properties and attributes for formulating polyurethane products, including aqueous polyurethane dispersions, can be made. The invention relates to a process for coating wood, wood materials and paper in which a radiation-curable coating composition is applied and cured by means of UV rays or electron beams. The film-forming component employed in the coating compositions comprises polyester acrylates and/or polyester methacrylates which can be prepared by esterifying polyesters or polyethers carrying at least two free hydroxyl groups per molecule and having number average molecular weights of between 400 and 4000 by means of from 100 to 150 mol%, based on the OH group of the polyester or polyether, of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with acidic catalysis and with azeotropic removal of the water of reaction. After the esterification catalyst has been neutralised, the residual acrylic or methacrylic acid is reacted with an epoxide compound containing at least two epoxide groups per molecule. The entrainer is then removed by distillation together with residual acrylic or methacrylic acid. The invention also relates to the process for the preparation of the polyester (meth)acrylates and to the use of these polyester (meth)acrylates in radiation-curable coating compositions.
