The dyes may be used to colour amide and hydroxyl group containing materials, particularly cellulose materials, by the usual reactive dye processes. Examples describe the preparation of monoazo dyes. The invention comprises a water-soluble reactive azo dye having the general formula where one of the X's denotes a hydrogen atom and the other X denotes -N=N-K; Y denotes a reactive acyl radical which contains up to 6 carbon atoms and is unsaturated in the a ,b -position, or a b -chloropropionyl group; K denotes the residue of a coupling component and represents a hydroxynaphthalene radical or a 1-phenyl-3-methyl-pyrazolone-(5) radical in which the phenyl nucleus may bear one chlorine and/or one sulphonic acid group and n is 1, 2 or 3. The dyes are produced by conventional diazotization and coupling procedures followed by acylation where necessary. The radical Y may be derived from acrylic acid which may be substituted with halogen atoms or alkyl and/or carboxylic acid or carboxylic amide groups. The preparation of many mono- and disazo dyes is described in examples. The dyes are particularly suitable for colouring cotton, viscose, wool, silk, leather and skins.

Groups which may be represented by Y include halogen atoms, alkyl or aryl sulphonic acid ester groups, phenoxy- or dialkylamino groups, and thiosulphuric acid ester, phosphoric acid ester or sulphuric acid ester groups. The dyes are obtained conventionally by diazotization and coupling and if the resulting dye contains a group of formula -SO 2 -CH 2 -CH 2 -OH the hydroxyl group is optionally esterified with a sulphating or phosphorylating agent. Azo-dyes contng. the gp. -CH2.NH.CO.R linked to an aromatic nucleus, (where R is an opt. substd. alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl or heterocyclic residue), are made by condensing a cpd. contng. a reactive aromatic H atom (1 mol.) with at least 1 mol. of the nitrile R.CN and at least 0.5 mol. of a symmetrical-dihalomethyl ether, pref. O(CH2Cl)2. The cpd. may be either a diazo-component or a coupling component, and is coupled with the matching component to give azo-dyes of good liqht- and wash-fastness on wool, silk, polyamide and leather. The condensation is carried out in 80 - 100% H2SO4 or H3PO4.

A = phenylene or naphthylene with 0-3 R substituents; R = 1-4 carbon (C) alkyl, 1-4 C alkoxy, halogen, sulfo, amino, 1-4 C alkylamino, acylamino, carboxy, hydroxy (OH), carboxamido, nitro and/or cyano; B = a vinylsulfonyl (precursor) group, -SO2Y, or a reactive amino group, -NR3Cy; Y = vinyl or -CH2CH2Z; Z = a group eliminated by alkali; R3 = hydrogen (H) or a (substituted) 1-4 C alkyl or phenyl group; Cy = a heterocyclic reactive group containing halogen; or A-B = a substituted phenyl group; M = H, an ammonium ion, an alkali metal or the equivalent or an alkaline earth metal; m, n = 0 or 1. Water soluble monoazo dyestuffs.. G2A. Suitable as acid dyestuffs for the dyeing of wool, silk and polyamides in mainly golden-yellow to orange shades have general formula:- (where D1 is an aromatic or heterocyclic residue, R is H or lower alkyl, X is the residue of a reactive compound or the residue of an alpha, beta-unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid or a vinylsulphone group. The group X- -D1 contains at least one -SO3H or -COOH group. In an example, 173(wt) aniline-o-SO3H were dissolved in 4000 pts water and diazotised in the usual way with sodium nitrite and conc. HCl. The diazo suspension was then added to a suspension of 150 pts. 2,6-di-hydroxy-3-cyano-4-methylpyridine in alkaline solution. After stirring for 4/6 hours the product was filtered off, washed and dried to yield a yellow powder which dyed wool and polyamides in yellow shades from an acid dyebath.

Dyeing is effected at temperatures up to or above 100 DEG C., at a constant or varying dyebath pH value and the dyebath may also contain ammonium sulphate, acetate or phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, sulphuric, phosphoric, formic or acetic acid, ethyl lactate or tartrate and anionic, cationic or non-ionic surface-active agents. Printing is followed by steaming and the printing paste may contain acid-binding agents and the usual thickeners and adjuvants such as sodium alginate, methyl cellulose, oil-in-water or water-in-oil emulsions, ethanol, urea and sodium-m-nitrobenzene sulphonate. Specified disperse azo dyes are 2-bromo-4-chloroacetyl-41-N : N-bis (b -hydroxyethyl) aminoazobenzene and 2-bromo- 4-chloroacetyl- 21-methyl- 41-(N- b -hydroxyethyl- N- b -cyanoethyl) aminoazobenzene.

The invention provides water- soluble anthraquinone-azo dyestuffs of the general formula <IMAGE> in which R1 represents a hydrogen atom or a sulphonic acid group, and the two R1s are not both hydrogen, K represents the radical of a coupling component and Z represents a fibre- reactive group which is linked to a carbocyclic aromatic nucleus of the coupling component, n being 1 or 2. The compounds may also be in the form of their salts. The compounds, preferably in the form of alkali metal salts, are useful for dyeing and printing fibre materials containing carboxamide groups, e.g. silk, wool and other animal hairs, polyamide and polyurethane fibres, and fibre materials containing hydroxy groups, e.g. cotton, linen and viscose rayon. Green to olive-green, blue and grey dyeings are obtained having good fastness to wet processing and very good fastness to light. The invention also provides intermediates for these dyestuffs in which the Zn group is replaced by an NHR group in which R represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group or a cyano-lower alkyl group.
