A laundry detergent composition is obtained by reacting an alkyl benzene sulphonic acid with stoichiometric or excess amount of an alkali metal hydroxide in the presence of a soluble alkali metal carboxy methyl cellulose. The methyl cellulose is mixed with acid for 20-30 minutes at temperature not greater than 60‹ C. and the resultant mixture is neutralized with alkali. An excess amount of alkali is added so that the anhydrous product contains 10À5-11À5% of free caustic, which is preferably NaOH. The alkyl benzene sulphonate may be dodecyl benzene sulphonic acid. Builder salts such as sodium sulphate up to 6%, sod. tripoly phosphate up to 12 % can be incorporated in the product by preparing the caustic liquors with the builders incorporated in it or by adding the dry mixed builders to the neutralized paste.
