Animal skin substrate treatment apparatus and method An apparatus for treating at least one animal skin substrate with a multiplicity of solid particles comprises a rotatably mounted drum for containing said animal substrate, said solid particulate material and a treatment liquor, said drum comprising an outlet opening and a closure. The closure can be moveable between a first position wherein said outlet opening is closed and the animal substrate, the solid particulate material and the treatment liquor cannot pass through the outlet and are retained within the drum and a second position wherein said outlet opening is open such that solid particulate material and the treatment liquor can exit the drum through the outlet opening. The drum can further comprise an apertured screen arranged at the outlet and configured to permit passage through the outlet opening of the solid particulate material and the treatment liquor when the closure is in the second position and to prevent passage thereof through the outlet opening of the animal skin substrate. The apertured screen is suitably moveable from the outlet opening to permit loading and unloading of the animal skin substrate through the outlet opening when the closure is in the second position. An improved hide processing machine has a hide-treating drum supported for rotation about a central longitudinal axis to retain and tumble hides and treating fluids at a closed end of the drum. The drum includes helical partition means extending across the interior of the drum and spirally along the drum axis from its closed end toward its open end, thereby dividing the drum into at least two longitudinally-extending spiral compartments. The partition means prevents movement of hides from one such compartment to another during rotation of the drum, and includes fluid-transmitting openings for free movement of treating fluid between such compartments. The helical partition means can provide a conveying force for retaining or discharging such hides when the drum is rotated in an appropriate direction.

Microwave installation with toroidal resonators for separation of hair coat from skin of rabbit hides during brine spraying contains guide tube 1 located at an inclination. Inside tube 1 there moved is dielectric rope-washer 9 transporter. Toroidal resonators 4, 5 of circular cross-section are coaxially fitted on guide tube 1 through equal gaps providing for porosity of technological process of action of electromagnetic field of ultrahigh frequency less than 0.5. In central part 5 of each toroidal resonator 4, made in the form of parallel installed flat rings at a distance greater than a quarter of the wavelength, the dielectric perforated coupling 7 is coaxially located. It connects non-ferromagnetic guide tubes 1, sprayers 8 and pipeline for supply of brine 6 are supplied to them. Magnetrons 3 are installed in central parts of resonators 5. In toroidal part 4, the middle perimeter of which is equal to multiple of half of wave length, there is perforation. Shielding case contains a drain pipe for brine removal. On the upper base of the shielding housing, which has a charging opening above the cylindrical resonator, along the perimeter there are microwave generators with emitters and a pneumatic line for suction of separated hair. In cylindrical resonators set rules from a dielectric material. Angle of the shielding housing is adjustable to ensure that the resonator with the rule is immersed in the brine. At end of conveyor there is drum 5 with pins, above which there is a probe with pneumatic line 4. At brine of two top faces of prismatic resonator there is sprayer 10 of brine. Diameter and length of conditionally inscribed cylinder in prism is equal to multiple of half of wavelength. An apparatus (1) is disclosed for processing the skin side of a tubular pelt (3) and comprising a tapering mandrel (1) for supporting the pelt (3) with its skin side turned outwards, a scraping device (5) comprising a first (7, 8) and a second (9, 10) pair of primary scraping rollers arranged on opposing sides of the mandrel (1), and a first pair of secondary scraping rollers (21, 22) arranged to engage the pelt (3) on the same, opposing sides of the mandrel (1) as the first pair of primary scraping rollers (7, 8), wherein a scraping roller (7) of the first pair of primary scraping rollers and a scraping roller (21) of the first pair of secondary scraping rollers, which are arranged to engage the skin side of a pelt on the same side of the mandrel (1), each has helical scraping edges (15, 28), and are arranged to impose force components transversal to the longitudinal direction of the mandrel (1) acting in the same direction.

They are then mechanically kneaded and agitated prior to dressing and fur removal. Compared with hand tubbing, which takes 24 hrs. or more, this brisk, mechanised, wet kneading and agitation will rejuventate skins in about half an hour. Saving in tubbing vats, floor space and water usage is possible.

Multiple treatment machine is for treating skins and leather and changes in the type of operation are made by changing the tool whilst the driving system for the skins remains the same. In a machine in which, after fleshing the hides, the impurities are removed from the wool by a washing process, the operator spreads the skins over a carrier roller with the wool side downwards. This roller can oscillate between a charging position and a running position by press. on a pedal. In the latter position, the skin is between the carrier roller and a driving roller, which rotates in the anticlockwise direction; at the same time the skin is applied against a fleshing roller (I) and any pieces of flesh are removed. The skin passes between rollers to a second carrier roller which is applied against a second fleshing roller (II) which completes the process. The skin is tasken to a cleaning roller (III) where washing is effected between this and a carrier and driving roller; the skin having been turned over so that the wool side is offered to the cleaning roller. The skin is then evacuated from the machine. Other operations can be effected on the same machine by replacing rollers (I), (II) and (III) by other appropriate rollers.

The invention also relates to a method for flattening an associated flexible membrane.

Cutting rollers of hide-treating machines, such as those for removing wool, thinning, softening, raising the grain etc., require frequent grinding if they are to operate cleanly and rapidly; the cutting blades are quickly blunted and wear away more rapidly than desirable. In this arrangement the helicoidal blades of the cutting roller are given a definite inclination, instead of being radial, the blades are an extension of the chord of the circular section of the roller. The angle of inclination of the blades to the radii is 10-45 degrees; cutting is much improved and the hair, wool, or the superficial defects are truly cut and not sheared or torn away. The cutting edges are preserved for a longer period and the life of the blade is, therefore, much longer. In addition the machine works more smoothly and with a lower power consumption.

Drum includes a long section, in the form of a truncated cone, firmly connected to a base; a grid is provided for protecting the discharge valve against possible obstruction by the skins as well as for flattening the angle at the base of the drum. Blades, for entraining the skins are fixed in the wall of the drum and make an angle with the radial plane passing through the implanted edge of the blade. Thus the mechanical work effected on the skins is different according to the direction of rotation of the drum and so by turning the drum in the two directions two types of treatment can be effected in the same drum.

Rotating drum, mounted on a horizontal shaft, has a charging and discharging orifice opposite the driving end with its pulley and motor. An endless screw, coaxial with the drum, transports the skins and prods. from the opening into the drum, when the latter is rotating in one direction and discharges them when it turns in the opposite direction. The endless screw moves the skins in a progressive manner which can be controlled by altering the rotational speed of the drum. The shaft of the screw may be hollow so that liqs. can be introduced inside the drum. Introduction of the skins is facilitated when the drum turns in the working direction and the treated skins can be discharged, automatically and at a controlled rate, merely by reversing the direction of rotation.

An installation for removing the dust caused by a grinding operation on tanned skins, esp. those with a light handle and very little body, such as chamois and kid, etc., has conveyor belts with holes or bands of woven or flat material with few open meshes but still permeable to air, pneumatic arrangements with nozzles for air blasting, and suction openings preceded by decompression chambers, covering both sides of the conveyor, with suction openings in which a set of rollers turn freely and support one face of the conveyor carrying the skin. Provides a suction device which cannot pull in and buckle the lightweight skins, thus doing away with manual straightening and brushing.
