Artificial silk threads are sized by treatment with aqueous dispersions of one or more esters of polymerized acrylic or methacrylic acid containing also glue. The methyl or ethyl polyacrylic or polymethacrylic esters may be used. The artificial threads may be sized in skein or warp form. They may be of cellulose acetate or cuprammonium regenerated cellulose. The sizings are fast to washing and dyeing and need not be removed. The sized threads do not stick, and a close warp may be woven satisfactorily. For warp sizing there may be used 100--150 grams per litre of a composition consisting of 6 parts glue, 56 parts of a 25 per cent aqueous dispersion of a methyl ester of polyacrylic acid, and 38 parts of water. The sizing is effected at 60 DEG C. For skein sizing a somewhat lower concentration is used and the temperature may be 30--40 DEG C. Fabric softening compositions containing more than 2% of a cationic fabric softener, an amphoteric deposition polymer having a molecular weight greater than 1000 and being substantially free from anionic detergent active, are disclosed. The polymer acts as a deposition aid to reduce the adverse effect of anionic surfactant from the wash cycle being carried into the rinse cycle and forming a complex with the softener.

Provided is a method for preparing a flame-retardant composite fabric, the method sequentially including: a solution preparation step of mixing water with glycerol while heating them at a temperature of 60 to 80° C., thereby preparing a glycerol solution; a composite preparation step of adding powdery corn starch to the glycerol solution to obtain a glycerol/corn starch mixture, continuously stirring the glycerol/corn starch mixture, allowing the stirred glycerol/corn starch mixture to stand for a predetermined time, and then grinding the glycerol/corn starch mixture, thereby preparing a powdery thermoplastic starch composite; a powder application step of applying the powdery thermoplastic starch composite to a surface of a sheet-like flax fabric; and a hot-press molding step of subjecting the flax fabric with the thermoplastic starch composite applied thereto to compression molding using a hot press, thereby preparing a flame-retardant composite fabric; and also provides a flame-retardant composite fabric prepared thereby. 1. A flame-retardant composite fabric prepared by applying to a surface of a flax fabric a mixture of a powdery flame retardant and a thermoplastic starch composite comprising corn starch as a main component and then subjecting the flax fabric to compression molding using a hot press.2. The flame-retardant composite fabric of claim 1 , wherein the thermoplastic starch composite is prepared by mixing water with glycerol to prepare a glycerol solution claim 1 , adding and mixing corn starch with the glycerol solution to obtain a glycerol/corn starch mixture claim 1 , allowing the glycerol/corn starch mixture to stand for a predetermined time claim 1 , and then grinding the glycerol/corn starch mixture.3. The base yarn, which is preferably multifilamentary or fibrillated to carry a large amount of the adhesive composition, may be a polyamide, polyester or, preferably, a polyolefin such as high density polyethylene or polypropylene, and is heated after being woven to bond the pile fibres to it. The latter may be wool, polyester, acrylic, polyamide, rayon, polypropylene, or wool/polyamide or wool/ rayon mixtures. Preferably the component of the adhesive composition that is copolymerised with ethylene is vinyl acetate, but other suitable components are vinyl formate, vinyl propionate, vinyl butyrate, ethyl acrylate, isobutyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate. To improve adhesion to the base yarn the adhesive composition may also include a further copolynierisable monomer such as acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid, acrylamide, #-dimethylamino-ethyl methacrylate, #-hydroxyethyl acrylate, diallyl maleate, diallyl phthalate, diallyl ether or ethylene glycol dimethacrylate. Nylon fibres or warp yarns are treated with an aqueous solution of the ammonium, a quaternary ammonium, or the sodium or potassium salt of a copolymer of styrene or a substituted styrene with an alkyl ester of maleic acid in which the alkyl group contains 1-4 carbon atoms, and then dried. The solution is free from substances which would react with the salt of the copolymer on heating to form an insoluble resin, and the fibres or yarns are not subjected to any after-treatment with such substances. Drying may take place at 200-300 DEG F. The sized nylon warp yarns may be woven into a fabric and the fabric may be subjected to finishing treatments without first desizing it. The treatment decreases the amount of dusting and shedding during weaving operations and improves the strength of the yarns. The sizing solution may be applied at raised temperature, e.g. 120-150 DEG F., or, if desired, at room temperature without gelling. The sized yarns may be dried by passage over heated rollers or by means of a current of air. The alkyl group of the maleic ester may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, or secondary butyl. The concentration of the copolymer salt in the bath and the pick-up of the sizing rolls should be adjusted to deposit on the yarns 2-12 per cent by weight of the salt. If a semi-permanent stiff finish is desired, it is necessary when ammonium salts are used to dry the yarns, or the fabrics produced from them, at a temperature, e.g. 250-300 DEG F., sufficiently high to set the resin. When sodium or potassium salts are used, the resin may be set by subjecting the yarns or fabrics to a dilute acid bath. The copolymer may be prepared by heating styrene and a maleic ester at 100-300 DEG F. for several hours using, e.g., 1 mol. of styrene to 0.25-4 mols. of maleic ester. A solvent such as acetone and a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide may be present. If desired, a copolymer of styrene and maleic anhydride may be prepared first and then esterified, or a mixture of styrene ...

Aq. dispersions of copolymers of 0.1-20wt.% mono-beta-sulphoethyl esters of maleic and/or fumaric acid (I) or their salts with 80-99.8wt.% other olefinically unsatd. monomers (II) are prepd. in aq. emulsion in presence of standard polymsn. catalysts, emulsifiers and dispersants and opt. regulators and buffers. Pref. aq. dispersions of copolymers prepd. from 0.5-3wt.% with 97-99.5wt.% (II) are useful as impregnating agents and coatings for woven and non-woven fibre materials and building materials, and aq. dispersions of copolymers prepd. from 3-10wt.% (I) and 90-97wt.% (II) are useful for priming leather or for hydrophilic finishing of textiles. Dispersions may also be used as dispersants for pigments.

The invention concerns a method which consists in treating in an aqueous medium with a water soluble modifying (co)polymer having heat-sensitive properties, in particular a LCST between 3 and 100 °C. The method consists in treating the substrate in an aqueous medium by the heat-sensitive modifying (co)polymer at a temperature not less than the LCST of the heat-sensitive (co)polymer to precipitate the latter onto the substrate while it is being treated on account of its hydrophobic character in this temperature domain. In the case where the substrate to be treated cannot be subjected to temperature exceeding a value T, the method consists in treating the substrate in an aqueous medium at a temperature < T, the water soluble and heat-sensitive (co)polymer being then selected among those having a LCST not higher than treatment temperature. In the case where the substrate is treated in an aqueous medium at a temperature not higher than the LCST of the water soluble heat-sensitive (co)polymer, the (co)polymer is selected among those having functional, ionic or compatibility units enabling to fix it on the substrate.

(I) is produced by the exterification of a higher aliphatic alcohol with a glutamic acid. The nonionic surfactant is pref. polyoxyethylene glycol alkyl ehter(or ester) and/or polyoxyethylene glycol of sorbitan fatty acid ester. The softening agent has a high water absorptivity and a good antistatic effect.

The copolymers are made from (A) 3-60 wt.% alpha, beta-unsat. carboxylic acids with 3-5 C atoms, (B) 40-97 wt.% esters of such acids, (C) 0-40% other monomers with C=C bonds, (D) 4-20% water soluble alkanols, alkane diols, ketones and/or carbonamides, and (E) 0-10% water. Polymerisation is at 60-100 degrees C using usual water-insoluble radical initiators, giving highly concentrated solns. which are neutralised with diluted alkalis or ammonia to a copolymer content of 25-60 wt.%. Remaining amounts of (D) may be wholly or partly removed e.g. by distillation. The copolymer solns. are suitable as sizes for fibres and yarns, and have relatively low viscosities. They resist swelling and are almost insoluble in water at 20-30 degrees C, but dissolve in dilute alkali solns.
