(US)

Carpets with surfactant-stabilized emulsion polymer carpet binders for improved processability

Celanese International Corp

Disclosed are improved carpet products made using certain types of coating compositions to secure carpet fibers to a carpet backing or substrates and/or to secure one or more carpet scrims or other layers to carpet backing. The coating compositions, which can be in the form of either precoating or skip coating compositions, are made from latex binder emulsions based on interpolymers emulsion polymerized from vinyl esters, ethylene, and a multifunctional cross-linking co-monomer such as an unsaturated silane. Such emulsions are also stabilized with surfactant emulsifiers but are substantially free of protective colloid stabilizers. The multifunctional co-monomer alters interpolymer molecular weight, branching and/or flow properties such that films formed from such interpolymers exhibit relatively low elongation values. When the emulsion binder exhibits such non-elongating film-forming characteristics, the carpet coating composition made from such binders can be easily processed without build-up on carpet processing apparatus. Such binder emulsions which are stabilized substantially only with surfactant emulsifiers, and not with protective colloids, also have excellent compatibility with other coating composition components.

Tuft bind of urethane backed artificial turf

Bayer MaterialScience LLC

The present invention relates to an improved process for the production of artificial turf, and the improved artificial turf. In accordance with this process, fibers are treated via corona discharge, tufted into a primary backing to form a greige good, and a precoat is applied to the back surface the greige good. Suitable fibers are polyolefins, and suitable precoats are reactive polyurethane mixtures. The fibers may be treated by corona discharge either before they are tufted into the primary backing to form the greige good or after the are tufted into the primary backing. Artifical turfs of the present invention comprise a greige good having fibers tufted into a primary backing, with the fibers being treated by corona discharge either before or after being tufted into the primary backing, and a precoat which is attached by its face surface to the back surface of the greige good.

Process of laminating carpet to elastomeric backing

Harold Reuben
Akro Corp

A method of laminating a curable elastomeric backing section to a pile carpet section, for example, for automobile floor mats, utilizing a compressive molding process to laminate the curable elastomeric backing to the carpet. Cooling the pile of the carpet protects the carpet from becoming substantially permanently deformed during molding despite the compressive molding pressure. While the carpet pile is being cooled, sufficient heat is applied to the elastomeric backing to cure the backing. The back face of the carpet is bonded to the elastomeric backing during the compressive molding process.
