A disc filter assembly includes a number of filter discs mounted in a vat by a horizontal shaft with an inter-disc volume between the discs. A feed mechanism is provided that makes it possible to feed the pulp suspension onto the surface of the liquid, directed toward the most concentrated pulp in the vat, in such a manner that the feed is insensitive to fluctuations of the suspension surface level in the vat. This is accomplished by feeding the suspension into the vat interior directly into each of the inter-disc volumes, as by using a chute (which may have the approximate configuration of a hollow triangular parallelepiped) for each volume. A header for supplying pulp suspension to the chutes may be mounted on or spaced from the sidewall of the vat, or above the vat.

The fibers of recycled paper are cleaned by agitating the slurry containing the fibers to maintain the fibers in suspension, and contacting the slurry with wash water to remove ink and other contaminants. The apparatus includes a passageway having screens forming opposite sides of the passageway. Agitators are within the passageway, and create enough turbulence to prevent fibers from settling or agglomerating. Channels adjacent to each screen carry wash water, and pump pressure creates a pressure differential across the screens to cause the wash water to contact the slurry and to be removed from the passageway.

In a device for cleaning and/or moistening surfaces or spaces, for precipitating dust or foams, in particular for peeling off the filter cakes from filter plates in paper manufacture, pipe branches start from a spray liquid feed pipe and serve to hold spray cans which apply the liquid to the object to be cleaned or moistened. A cylindrical housing is releasably attached to the connection part of the pipe branch, which serves to feed the liquid, in the manner of a T-element and has a radial recess in which a nozzle having a widened portion is arranged in such a way that the nozzle outlet located at the apex point or approximately at the apex point of the widened portion projects into the interior of the cylindrical housing. The cylindrical housing is penetrated axially by a manually operable cleaning device for the nozzle outlet. By means of such a device it is possible to clean individual contaminated or blocked nozzles without the entire system having to be shut down for this purpose. The contaminated or blocked nozzles remain in their mounted position during the cleaning process. Since as a result of this the outage times of the entire system can be virtually reduced to zero, it is now possible to a very large extent to dispense with the expensive fresh water which was used previously to a certain extent and with the equally expensive systems for cleaning and processing circulation water. Instead, the unrestricted use of circulation water containing impurities is possible.

[Class 96] In a machine for carrying out continuously the process of Specification 660,570, paper pulp admitted at 26 is swept by a moving head 25 over a draining plate 40 on to a roughened plate 70 and another e.g. roughened plate 100 is mounted over them so that it can be moved towards them to press the pulp and across them to roll it. The inlet 26 may be in the middle of the plate 40 which may be surrounded by the plate 70 and the plate 100 may be moved eccentrically about an axis 84 extending in the direction of that of the head 25. The latter may have arms 28 which may curve spirally, may be close to the plate 40 and may have sloping upper surfaces. The plate 70 may have holes leading into annular channels connected to pipes 73 through which liquid may be obtained from or supplied to the pulp. One plate, e.g. plate 70 may be made in adjustable sections. The plates 70 and 100 may have toothed working surfaces and some teeth may be inclined thereto, pointing, for example, away from the inlet. The inclined teeth may be pyramidal and may be arranged symmetrically. The plate 100 may be moved periodically toward and from the plate 70 as by a pair of fluid-operated pistons 120 reciprocating in cylinders 121, Fig. 14, and connected to rocking plates 130 and 131 themselves connected through gimbals 140 and 142 with the plate 100. Fluid may be supplied to one end of each cylinder 121 through a valve 202, Fig. 17, a third cylinder 175 being connected through a valve 200 with the said end of each cylinder 121, a piston 176 being reciprocated in the cylinder 175 as by a cam 187 &c. In a paper making process a sorting assembly removes foreign bodies from a fibrous suspension. The assembly has a separation chamber with a suspension inlet, a clean suspension outlet, and a discharge for foreign bodies. The separation chamber is sub-divided into two by a sieve. The sieve is profiled on the suspension inlet and reject material side. The profiled sieve sets up vortices in the incoming suspension. The sieve surface may be flat, cambered or corrugated with peaks and troughs of between 0.3 and 1.5 mm. The sieve is a perforated plate with slits. The incoming suspension impinges on the slots at an angle of between 70 and 110 degrees. The plate may be sheet metal, ceramic or plastic and bears an anti-wear coating. Also claimed is a multi-stage sorting assembly.

Abstract of the Disclosure Flow spreading method and apparatus particularly adapted for use with a geneally parabolic, slotted screening or dewatering surface, which redimensions the cross-sectional shape of a flow of material from a relatively narrow width, deep depth flow to a relatively shallow depth, wide width flow approximately equal to the width of the surface to which the flow is delivered. The apparatus includes a curved plate pre-ferably having a substantially constant radius of curvature and a conduit which directs the material against the curved plate non-tangentially with respect to its surface to induce a smooth but rapid redirection and hence, redimensioning of the flow cross-sectional configuration. The conduit feeding the material may have at least its terminal portion constructed of a flexible material which allows the conduit outlet to be pressed against the surface of the curved plate and deformed somewhat to enhance flow spreading while still permitting the passage of relatively large objects through the conduit.

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for sorting out recycled paper pulp obtained from scrap material containing contaminants in the form of large pieces of foreign material such as plastics, adhesives, pieces of rope and the like. The device of the invention comprises a drum (1) with an horizontal axis (2), an end wall (3) of the drum being fitted with a perforated plate (4) and an helical stirrer (5) having profiled blades rotating in a plane parallel to this plate at a short distance thereof, these blades having a transverse cross-section with a hydrodynamic profile adapted for generating a depression in front of the perforated plate, and a leading edge (6) forming a Bernouilli spiral with a constant angle of approximately 30 DEG , the drum (1) comprising a pulp inlet (10) with a valve (11) located opposite the perforated plate, an auxiliary enclosure (7) for recovering accepted pulp behind the perforated plate, connected to the suction side of a pump (8), a water inlet (12) with a valve (13), a vent (16) and a large bottom opening (14) with a valve (15) for discharging the refuse after the accepted pulp has been recovered. While the above-described device is designed for batch operation, a modified embodiment is provided in which twin units of the above design are associated for continuous operation (1a and 1b, FIG. 5) controlled by a 3-way valve (24) for alternatively feeding contaminated pulp to either sorting unit. In either case, the refuse is washed clear and water is drained out of the refuse before its discharge, so that it may be readily discarded without further processing, and the stirrer permanently prevents the perforated plate from becoming plugged.

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for treating fiber suspension. The method and apparatus in accordance with the present invention is especially suitable for treating the fiber suspensions of the wood processing industry, for example, in thickening or washing pulp. The methods and apparatuses in accordance with prior art techniques have recently been based on using vacuum filters. In other words, the separation of liquid from the pulp has been based on the fact that an underpressure has been arranged on one side of the pulp cake, whereby the external atmospheric pressure has displaced liquid in the pulp. Thereby air has passed into the pulp causing slime problems among other things. On the other hand, a drawback with such apparatus has been their poor ability to utilize the filter surface, because only 50 - 60 % of the total filter surface area has even under the best conditions being efficiently used. The method and apparatus in accordance with the present invention enables the use of almost the whole filter surface by arranging the pressurized feed of the pulp to the apparatus, whereby liquid is separated due the lower pressure, for example the normal atmospheric pressure prevailing behind the filter surface. On the other hand, the discharge of the pulp cake has been arranged to be carried out from only a very limited portion of the filter surface, whereby the use of the filter surface area is even further intensified.
