Disclosed is a harvesting combine having a cab for an operator, a wheel assembly adjacent to a stairs assembly having a top and a bottom, and an improved stairs assembly for accessing the cab by the operator. A fall restraint system comprises a webbing and a restraint mechanism. The restraint mechanism comprises a first end and a second end. A cam is located at the first end. A plurality of washers is positioned in series from the second end with at least one of the washers located adjacent to the cam. The webbing is inserted into the restraint mechanism from the second end and wrapped in a serpentine path around the plurality of washers, around the cam, and out of the restraint mechanism through the first end such that the webbing is interposed between the cam and the washer located adjacent the cam. A pass-through cable grab system which allows a workman wearing a harness to move up and down a ladder on a tower or similar structure while being protected from falling by a vertically extending safety cable attached to the tower. The invention relates to a collapsible fire-escape ladder with safety belt, of which the side bars (A,S) consist of U-sections and the rungs (W) of a square tube. The rungs are fastened to the side bars by means of articulated connections. At the upper end of the ladder there is a device (J,K) which protects the ladder against theft. One or more separate escape stations or release stations can be installed by sawing through the outer bar (A) and by fastening a freeing pin (O) into the outer bar (A) above the cut. The freeing pin (O) has a collar (R) which replaces the material removed as a result of the sawing operation. The connection between the outer bar (A) and the escape or release stations is made by means of a locking plug (H) which is introduced into a hole in the outer bar (A) and a hole in the freeing pin (O). A safety belt (E) is fastened to the outer bar (A) by means of a blocking arm (B). For this, the blocking arm (B) is inserted into the outer bar (A) either from the upper end of the outer bar or via an insertion slot on the rescue station which corresponds to the width of the blocking arm. The widest blocking arm (B) is provided at the topmost station. Under this, the insertion slots become sequentially narrower so that the blocking arm can slide over the insertion slots located under it. The rungs (W) allow blocking against a swinging-out of the ladder over 90 DEG , in that their ends come into engagement with the walls of the side bars. The upper and lower plates are linked, by a parallelogram linkage on each of two sides, so that the upper plate is pressed against the rail, in a given direction, while the lower plate is pressed against the rail, in an opposite direction, when the elongate, linking member is pulled downwardly or downwardly and away from the rail. The upper and lower plates are biased in the indicated directions. The mechanism further comprises a friction-enhancing wheel, which is biased against the rail.

A vertical fall arrest device is disclosed which combines in a single unit the means to arrest a fall, the capability to automatically traverse intermediate support means provided along a safety line, and ease of attachment to or detachment from the safety line at any point throughout its length. In the attached condition, in which a safety line (30) is captured in retaining recess (60), the device is always in a ready state to lock-on to the safety line in the event of a fall. The device is removed from the safety line by depressing release catch (44) against spring pressure and at the same time pulling wheel (42) in a direction away from body member (41). Movement of the wheel must also be effected against biasing pressure. This combined operation creates an opening for withdrawal of safety line (30). When the external forces are relaxed, internal springs (47a and 47b) ensure that both the wheel (42) and the release catch (44) return to their fully locked conditions.

The present invention relates broadly to a fall arrester (10) attached to a user's harness via a coupling arrangement (6). The fall arrester (10) is designed to be attached to a backup rope or safety line (12). The fall arrester 10 ()comprises a body (14), and a lever (16) pivotally coupled to the body (14). The lever (16) includes a primary cam (18) which is arranged to co-operate with the coupling arrangement (6). In operation, descent of the user urges the coupling arrangement (6) into contact with the lever 16 which pivots to effect braking of the safety line (12) between the body (14) and the primary cam (18). Some preferred embodiments include an inertial cam to initiate pivotal movement of the lever for braking of the rope with the primary cam; a tow cam connected to a tow line which includes a mechanical fuse; a secondary cam connected to the lever whereby panic gripping the rope and the coupling toward one another promotes braking of the rope between the primary cam and the body; an accelerator element to accelerate contact of the coupling with the lever; and an inverted cam to ensure correct orientation of the fall arrester.

A retractable safety post for facilitating access in and out of a manhole is slidably attached to each side rail of a wall-mounted ladder. Each post slides within a tubular sleeve fixed to the side rail and is selectively movable between a retracted or stowed position to an extended or use position. Each post has at its upper end a cap and handle for ease of grasping during use, and at its lower end a latch member for securing the post in its extended position during use. A wall bracket anchoring the ladder to the manhole serves as a resting support for the latch member and its post when in the extended position. The post is secured in the extended position by merely lifting the post, twisting the post a given amount in a pre-set direction, and lowering the post slightly so that the latch member can engage the wall bracket. In its stowed position, the post rests wholly within the manhole.

A tractive force is exerted on an element by a person climbing a stairway and a motor system applies a force to move the person upwards. The system will operate in the reverse direction to allow descent. A cage travelling up and down a stairway ramp has an endless chain (1, 1') which is driven in the same direction by a motor and gearbox assembly (2) via a chain wheel(s). This motor assembly is housed in a chassis which turns in a ball bearing assembly (6) about its vertical axis (5) and is suspended into field casing (7) from the cage roof. Power is connected to the motor (13), via a rheostat (9) and switch (10) and through a slip ring assembly (12). Application of power to the motor is controlled by a switch (14) and rheostat (16) which controls descent and provides a braking effect on the motor.

A collapsible platform assembly for an extension ladder is disclosed that can be used to support the top of an extension ladder with respect to a roof. The collapsible platform assembly includes a platform that is rotatably connected to a rung of an extension ladder near the top. In a storage or retracted position, the platform is generally co-planar with the ladder; i.e fits between the side rails of the extension ladder. In a use position, the platform can be extended and directly supported by the roof, either flat against a roof or alternatively at an acute angle relative to the roof. Since the platform is configured to be directly supported by the roof, the platform acts as a rigid support for the top of the ladder which does not deflect under load as there is an even weight transfer from the ladder to the platform in use. In accordance with an important aspect of the invention, an upper portion of the side rails act as “grab rails” when the platform is in an extended position, allowing the user to hold on and walk through the top of the ladder and onto the platform when the collapsible platform assembly is in an extended position. In one embodiment of the invention, one or more retractable hand rails are provided for added safety for use when the user moves onto the platform.
