The machine has a casing (1) with a cylindrical bore (2) within which a circular cylindrical piston (9) revolves eccentrically. The piston touches the cylinder bore at one point (8) and a vane (3) sliding in a radial slot (10) in the cylinder casing presses on the piston between the inlet and discharge ports (4, 5). The space between the piston and cylinder is thus divided into two variable vlume chambers (6, 7). The slot (10) for the vane runs completely through the casing from the inside to the outside along the whole length of the cylinder. The cavity also includes a circumferential wall portion between the outlet passage and the inlet passage over which the rotor passes with the vane members retracted within the rotor. A circumferential groove extending in the circumferential wall portion provides communication between radial openings simultaneously passing the wall portion to relieve pressure therein and to thereby facilitate radial movement of the vane members.

The piston includes a generally annular flexible band of smaller circumference than the inner circumference of the cylinder, and a rotary body accommodated within the band. The rotary body has three rollers for urging the band against the inner surface of the cylinder at three angularly spaced locations so that the band defines with the cylinder three working chambers. Two separating members mounted on the cylinder are biased into contact with the band. When the rotary body is rotated the band makes nonslip contact with the wall and rotates the working chambers about the axis of the rotary body. Each separating member separates each working chamber as it passes into two discrete enclosures. A port is located on each side of each separating member to allow communication with the two discrete enclosures. The machine can be operated as a compressor when the rotary body is driven or as an engine to drive the rotary body.

A rotary engine comprises a circular rotor surrounded by an annular stator. The rotor is provided around its outer circumference with spaced combustion chambers and with recesses therebetween. Each recess serves as an expansion chamber for a jet of gas produced by combustion in an associated combustion chamber. Each recess is also provided, remote from the associated combustion chamber, with a cam. The stator at its inner circumference has retractible reaction members which are movable into the recesses to be acted on by the gas jet so as to create forces acting in opposite sense on the rotor and stator and thus cause the rotor to rotate. The reaction members have deflector surfaces arranged to deflect the gas jet in such a manner that the members are drawn into the recesses, the members being engaged by the cams during the rotor rotation and moved back into the stator.

На контактирующих между собой поверхност х заслонок 3 и поршней 5 закреплены уплотнительные элементы 12, повтор ющие их профиль. Заслонка 3 и элемент 12, закрепленный на ней, имеют съемочную кромку. The engine has a circular cylinder (1) with cooling ribs on its outside. An elliptical rotor (3) is keyed to a shaft (2) on the centreline of the cylinder. The ends of the ellipse are rounded and carry sealing strips (5) which run on the inside of the cylinder. The cylinder has two inlet ports (6) diametrically opposite each other, two exhaust ports (7) and two sparking plugs (8) diametrically opposite each other. The space between the rotor and cylinder is divided by three pairs of vanes (9, 10, 11) sliding radially in the cylinder wall. The vanes are moved against springs by cams and open and close the spaces from each other to give the correct sequence of operations for a four stroke cycle.

The invention is characterized in that: the rotor comprises a disc (1), two concentric flanges (4, 8) arranged on either side of said disc (1) and two fixed vanes (3, 7) arranged diametrically opposite on either side of said disc (1) each one against one surface of said disc (1) and assembled at the periphery of a flange (4, 8) so as to obtain an assembly with rotational equilibrium; in extended position into the volume of the cylindrical chamber (2), the abutting elements (5, 6, 25) are positioned proximate to, but non in contact with, the flanges (4, 8).

The engine has a stator (1) in which a rotor (2) revolves concentrically with the output shaft. The rotor has a circumferential slot (3) which forms the expansion chamber. The expanding gases press on the step at the end of the slot. The combustion chamber is separate from the expansion chamber and is formed as a recess (4) in the bore of the stator. The sparking plug is in this chamber. A vane (9) slides in a slot in the stator and is spring loaded to press on the rotor. A secondary fluid passes in a coil (5) round the combustion chamber and is injected through nozzles (8) into the expansion chamber formed by the rotor slot.

The shaft also carries a radial vane (16) separating the working spaces with a seal to the cylinder. There is a gap (17) at the back of the vane through which one of the spaces (14) is permanently in communication with the hollow interior (18) of the rotor. At the front the vane is sealed to the rotor by a strip mounted on a shaft (20) parallel to the main shaft. The strip fits tightly into a concave recess (22) on the rotor and has a cylindrical projection at its other end fitting into a recess in the face of the vane.
