While the coolant or lubricant is below its normal operating temperature, a slide 14 is in the position shown in Fig. 1, so that manifold vacuum is communicated by pipes 11, 12 to an actuator 8 causing flap 7 to cut off cold air and allow heated air to reach the engine. At normal operating temperature, slide 14 rises and flap 7 moves to the position shown in broken lines to cut off the heated air supply and allow cold air to pass to the engine. In Fig. 2 (not shown), the temperature sensing device 15 acts directly on the flap 7.

In a device for controlling the temperature of the intake air to an internal combustion engine, the piston of a hydraulic cylinder controls the setting of a damper between the warm-air intake and the cold-air intake. A sensor body in the mixed-air duct communicates, via a hydraulic conduit, with the cylinder. The sensor body is filled above a free piston with an expansion medium of higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the hydraulic medium on the opposite side of the free piston. By allowing the temperature in the engine compartment, for example, to determine the temperature of the hydraulic conduit, the control interval is displaced so that the temperature of the intake air is higher when the engine is cold than when it is warm.

An intake air temperature control device for mixture-compressing internal combustion engines having an inlet flapper proportioning the flows of cold and preheated raw air into a duct junction and into raw air mixing duct, the flapper-adjusting wax thermostat being arranged inside a thermostat chamber into which branch flows of cold and preheated raw air are admitted through two calibrated branch inlets. A narrow annular gap through which the combined branch flows must pass assures an integrated response of the thermostat to changing temperatures and air intake speeds. A lost-motion drive connection and a biasing member produce a full-load correction of the adjusted temperature. The flapper drive members may have valve edges which cooperate with the calibrated branch inlets to open and close the latter.

In an internal combustion engine air cleaner snorkel having an end open to ambient temperature air and an auxiliary inlet open to heated air, the induction air flow temperature is regulated by a pivoted damper assembly having a guide member positioned by a coiled bimetal and a damper member biased by a torsion spring for concomitant operation with the guide member. The damper member has a main blade portion responsive to the induction air flow rate and controlling ambient air flow and a pair of lateral blade portions controlling heated air flow but unresponsive to the induction air flow rate. Under conditions of high induction air flow the damper member moves away from the guide member against the bias of the torsion spring to permit ambient air flow through the open end and to block heated air flow through the auxiliary inlet.

There is disclosed an arrangement for the inlet of cooling and combustion air in a motor saw, the arrangement having the outdoor air inlet for the cooling fan positioned substantially on top of the motor saw body, such that the air is drawn from an area above the saw, where the concentration of pollutants is considerably lower than at the commonly known inlet through the fan cover. Owing to the fact that the air inlet is positioned at a distance from the fan cover, a common air channel for cooling and combustion air is created between the inlet and the fan wheel, in which channel a shunt damper is arranged. The shunt enables a balanced mixture of cold outdoor air and warm recirculating inner air to be achieved so that a proper engine temperature can be effected.

A cooling air feeding apparatus is for a motor vehicle, which has a motor vehicle body and a drive train, the drive train being assigned a cooler, and at least the cooler being arranged in a rear region of the motor vehicle body. The cooling air feeding apparatus has a throughflow opening, which is in the rear region and which is configured to receive air from surroundings of the motor vehicle and to feed the received air to the cooler. In order to regulate a driving state of the motor vehicle, the throughflow opening is configured with a variable throughflow cross section with the aid of a closing element, which is assigned to the cooling air feeding apparatus. The throughflow opening is configured to be controllably closed individually completely or partially and to be opened completely. 1. The air intake manifold is divided into two sections before the filter. One section (21) receives cold air and the other (22) receives heated air. A diverter valve (20) controls the proportion of air from each supply. This valve is operated by a mechanical linkage from a diaphragm (23). The air passes through the filter (19) and over two sensors (30 and 31), which have bimetal strips controlling valves opening at different angles, before passing the throttle valve (17). A switch (26) is operated by a diaphragm (33) which senses the manifold air pressure so that one of the sensors is switched in circuit to control manifold pressure applied to the diaphragm (23). Thus manifold pressure controls the proportion of cold and hot air passed to the manifold.

The improvements to internal combustion engines are more particularly intended to manifolds for the intake of the carburated mixture and for the exhaust of burnt gas, as well as to means for heating the carburettors. The intake manifold (1) is characterized in that a bore, of oblong cross-section, is helical and fine-shaped and in that the cross-section area of its inlet under the carburettor (3) is larger than that of its outlet to the cylinder (2) so as to twist and calibrate the gas vein. The exhaust manifold is characterized in that it comprises a conoidal elbow (9) connected to an oblique cylindrical detent muffler (12) prolonged by a flattened and perpendicular megaphone (15). The assembly comprised of the elbow (9), the detent muffler (12) and the megaphone (15) is arranged ahead of the carburettor (3) and of the intake manifold (1) for heating them and the megaphone (16) opens out close to said assembly.

A pivotally mounted flap 17, controlled by a thermostat 18 through a rod 19, regulates the proportions of hot and cold air entering the mixing chamber 12 so as to maintain the temperature of air leaving the chamber through an outlet tube 11 constant. The tube 11 acts as a baffle preventing the airflow from following a straight path from the inlets to the outlet of the chamber 12 and thus assisting mixing to give a uniform air temperature.

The engine has a suction manifold (25) with a carburettor (3) and a throttle (4). A second pneumatic positioner (16) moves a damper (17) in the exhaust which diverts the exhaust through a section (18,19) which preheats the fuel air mixture downstream of the throttle. An air heater is intended to be used in combination with an air cleaner comprising an air cleaner case, an air cleaner element dividing a space defined by the air cleaner case into a dust chamber on an upstream side with respect to the flowing direction of intake air and a clean chamber on a downstream side with respect to the flowing direction of intake air, and an intake duct connecting an air outlet pipe connected to the clean chamber to a throttle valve. The air heater comprises a heat exchanger case covering an opening formed in the air cleaner case so as to open into the dust chamber, and forming a heating passage for heating intake air; a heat exchanger; through which cooling water is circulated, disposed in the intake air passage defined by the heat exchanger case; a passage selector plate for selectively opening either the heating passage passing the heat exchanger or a bypass passage bypassing the heat exchanger and directly connected to the dust chamber; and a thermosensitive driving means provided with a temperature sensor for sensing intake air temperature and capable of controlling the passage selector plate. The thermosensitive driving means controls the passage selector plate automatically according to the temperature of intake air to heat intake air only when necessary.

Ambient inlet air and preheated inlet air are supplied to an internal combustion engine in proportions controlled by a proportioning valve to determine the temperature of the resultant inlet air mixture. Means responsive to the inlet air temperature downstream of the proportioning valve cooperate with an engine vacuum source to apply a temperature modulated motor actuating pressure to a vacuum motor, which in turn operates the proportioning valve to increase the proportion of ambient air as the inlet air mixture approaches a predetermined engine operating temperature. A restricted temperature responsive one-way check valve means retards the rate of flow of motor actuating pressure to the motor when the inlet air temperature downstream of the proportioning valve is above a predetermined minimum, prevents said flow entirely when the inlet air temperature is below said predetermined minimum, and enables the reverse flow of pressure freely from the motor regardless of temperature.

A thermostatic valve for compensating for the change in the intake air temperature of an internal combustion engine. The thermostatic valve has a temperature detector attached to a housing provided with a port in communication with atmosphere, a pipe in communication with a vacuum motor, a pipe in communication with the portion of the intake passage downstream from the throttle valve of carburetor and a pipe in communication with the float chamber of the carburetor and also with the air cleaner of the engine. A first valve element adapted to be operated by the temperature detector, and a second valve element adapted to be operated by the first valve element are disposed in the housing and are pressed against respective valve seats formed in the housing by means of springs. The introduction of vacuum in the intake passage into the vacuum motor for adjusting the intake air temperature is controlled in response to the change in the intake air temperature. At the same time, the shortage of intake air attributable to a rise of the intake air temperature is compensated by an additional supply of air which is made directly to the portion of the intake passage downstream from the throttle valve, upon detect of the rise of the intake air temperature.
