A length measurement device comprises: a tape which is wound on a reel received in a case, one end of which is pulled out of the case so as to measure the length of an object, and which has a barcode formed on one surface thereof; a first measurement unit for recognizing the barcode on the tape so as to generate a first measurement value of the length along which the tape is pulled out of the case; a second measurement unit for sensing a rotation angle of the reel so as to generate a second measurement value of the length along which the tape is pulled out of the case; and a control unit for making the first measurement value and the second measurement value mutually compensate for each other so as to convert same into the pulled-out length information of the tape.

A retractable tape , comprising:an enclosure having a slot;a tape having an elongate shape along a lengthwise direction, the tape having a first end rotatably attached to the enclosure and a second, free end disposed through the slot, the tape configured to be coiled into the enclosure and to extend therefrom through the slot, the tape having a first side that includes indicia and a second side;wherein the indicia are disposed along the first of the tape at regular, predefined intervals, the indicia including a first plurality of indicia having a first width along the lengthwise direction and a second plurality of indicia having a second width along the lengthwise direction, the second width being larger than the first width.2. The retractable tape of claim 1 , wherein the indicia are arranged along the tape in the lengthwise direction in fixed intervals that denote standard measurement units.3. The retractable tape of claim 2 , wherein the measurement units are U.S. Customary measurement units that include inch markings claim 2 , half-inch markings claim 2 , quarter-inch markings and sixteenth-inch markings.4. Said counters having metric and imperial indicia allowing a user to spin them and temporarily set them into a desired counting arrangement based upon the measurement observed on the device tape. Counting discs and knobs being temporarily set by means of ball and spring assemblies positioned behind each counter. An object of the invention is to enhance the accuracy and precision of existing, conventional tape measures by allowing users to record measurements gleaned from a tape directly on the device rather than writing it down on a separate piece of paper that may lead to potential recording errors.

The measuring tape is contained in a moulded case with provision for retaining the tape pull ring. The spirit level is integrated within the case to permit horizontal or vertical level measurements. The case is constructed of two plastic moulded shells, one male (1) and the other female (2). Two circular ribs inside the case aid the passage of the flexible tape (6). A boss (3) carries the tape winding handle (30). On the end of the case is a recess (14) with a raised portion (18) with deep slot (19) for retaining the tape pull ring (15). A recess on top of the case contains a spirit level (27) initially adjustable by screws (26) and with a transparent cover (24).

The twin measuring tape (10) consists of two measuring tapes (14, 16) mounted on separate drums with parallel axes and contained in a common housing (12). To find the central point of any object each measuring tape is pulled out and hooked over the edge of the object (26). The housing (12) is then moved in one or other direction until each tape indicates the same dimension at the point where it emerges from the housing (12). The head (22) of the centre punch (20) is then struck with a hammer and makes a mark on the surface of the object (26). The scales (15, 17) are so arranged that when used as a normal measuring tape it is equally convenient for either a left-hand or right-handed person.
