Method and apparatus for detecting the profile and feeding state of paper sheets

Номер: US0004623975A1

At least one sheet of paper is conveyed in a feeding direction along a conveyance path. A line perpendicular to the feeding direction of the conveyed sheet includes at least first and second distinct view field regions (lengths) separated from one another by the center of the path. The light directed toward the sheet which passes across the path along the perpendicular line is optically scanned, and a value of the dimension a conveyed sheet projects into each of the first and second view field regions is produced for each scan. The sheet is repetitively scanned a plurality of times as it is conveyed along the path, and the values obtained, for each scan, for at least for the first and second regions are summed with a predetermined constant value to produce a sequence of width values representing the widths of the conveyed paper sheet at a corresponding plurality of longitudinal positions along the sheet. The width values from the sequence which fall within a range about a predetermined ...

Each reference device is rotatable to facilitate rapid movement of the sheet past the optical sensors. The transportation path may be defined by entry and exit guides. Alternatively it may be defined by upper and lower guides (20, 22) of spaced apart wires (24, 32) which do not substantially obscure the surfaces of sheet or the reference surfaces, from the optical sensors. Guide rollers (54, 58, 154, 158) project through spaces between the wires to advance the sheet. An automatic cleaning device is operable to clean the reference surfaces.

Measuring the limpness of a note (10) is necessary to separate a worn note (10a) out of circulation. Several methods are disclosed which can be used either alone or in combination to test for limpness. One method measures the note's ability to reflect light (12 and 20) or transmit the light (12 and 22). Another method measures the response of the note (10) to an acoustic wave (24, 26, 28 and 30). Another method measures the note's deflection to a pressure of force (32, 34 and 38). Yet another method measures the dielectric value of the note (10) when placed between the plates (38 and 40) of a capacitor. A final method involves measuring the thermal conductivity (42 and 44) of the note (10). In each case, a limp note (10a) will produce distinguishable results from a stiff note (10).

Apparatus is disclosed for determining the degree of stiffness of a sheet, for example a banknote, the stiffness being indicative of the condition of the banknote. The banknote (4) is drawn around a bobbin-shaped drum (1) by means of a pair of belts (2, 3) which grip a central portion of the banknote. The inner belt (2) drives or is driven by the central portion of the drum (1). The concave shape of the drum (1) imparts a curvature to the banknote in an axial plane, while the banknote is simultaneously curved in an orthogonal plane as it is wrapped around the drum. As the banknote passes around the drum it emits an audible noise which is picked up by a microphone (5). The amplitude of the microphone signal (7) is proportional to the crispness of the banknote and is indicative of the age of the banknote.

A device for detecting the degree of deterioration of bank notes has a driving rotary body and a detection rotary body, which are a pair of oppositely disposed rollers each having alternately disposed enlarged diameter portions and annular grooves. These enlarged portions and the grooves of the two rotary bodies are in staggered, opposed relationship so that when a bank note is conveyed between the two rotary bodies, the note is deformed into a wave shape. The rotation of the driving rotary body influences on the rotary movement of the detection rotary body depending on the stiffness of the bank note in the wave shape. When the bank note is new and stiff, the influence is strong, while when the bank note is old and deteriorated with a small stiffness, the influence is small. Such influence is detected from variation in rotary movement of the detection rotary body to which a predetermined rotational characteristic is given by a clutch device.

A bill validator of an automated teller machine includes a magnetic detector for detecting magnetism of bills. The magnetic detector has pressing members of resin material having bearings bored therein. The bearings rotatably hold a shaft for a guide roller which presses bills against the lower surface of a magnetic sensor. The guide roller rotates as bills run on a conveyance path. However, since the bearings consist of fixed parts of resin material and the shaft is formed of non-magnetic material, the rotation does not cause changes in a magnetic field. Thus, when the guide roller rotates, the surrounding magnetic field does not change, so that, although the magnetic detector locates in the vicinity of the guide roller, the magnetic head of the magnetic sensor can well accurately sense the magnetism of bills. 1.
