Improving contrast of liquid crystal display

Номер: GB0002408138A

A method of driving a liquid crystal display in which the contrast can be selectively emphasized dependent upon the input data. The input data is converted into brightness components and chrominance components. The most-frequent brightness component is extracted from a histogram of the brightness components, and the histogram is divided into regions, which are rearranged in correspondence with the extracted most-frequent value. The brightness components of each region are then modified using a curve having a slope that is dependent upon the total number of brightness components in the particular region. Data in which the contrast ratio has been selectively emphasized is generated using the modulated brightness components and the chrominance components.

SYSTEM FOR PRODUCING DITHERED IMAGES FROM CONTINUOUS-TONE IMAGE DATA

Номер: CA0001316255C

... 83-417 A digital image processing system for converting continuous tone pixel values representing an image into halftone or dithered pixel values, with the dithered pixel values representing each pixel having fewer bits than are used to represent each pixel in the continuous tone image. The continuous tone pixel for a line of pixels is loaded into an input buffer circuit having a plurality of storage locations, with each location storing the continuous-tone values for one pixel. Iteratively, the pixel value from each location is modified by a perturbed weighted error value, and then quantized to form the output halftone or dithered pixel value. An error value is then determined which is used in processing of subsequent continuous tone pixel values. The processing of the continuous tone pixel values proceeds in a serpentine manner over the image, that is, processing of adjacent lines of the continuous tone pixel data proceeds in opposite directions.

The alternate codes are used to smooth the transition between intensity codes as major bits are turned on. The smoothing occurs by the gradual transition from codes that do not use the major bit to codes that do use the major bit. Typically the alternate codes are selected based on the location of the pixel in a spatial pattern ( 100 ) and the alternate codes are spatially alternated from one pixel ( 102 ) to the next ( 104 ). Other embodiments temporally alternate the codes from one period—typically a frame period—to the next. Still other embodiments alternate the codes both spatially and temporally.

As a result, when an area is illuminated by surrounding backlight sources, the actual display luminance can be calculated correctly. Thus, pixel display can be provided with correct display tones across the entire screen, thereby preventing a reduction in display quality.

A luminescence shock avoidance algorithm selectively limits the brightness level of a display device when the display device is activated in a dark environment to prevent the temporary vision impairment that can occur when a display device is activated in a dark environment. The algorithm receives the state of the display (e.g. on or in standby mode), and can optionally receive an ambient lighting value from an ambient light sensor and a user-selectable manual brightness adjustment setting to determine whether luminescence shock avoidance should even be triggered, and if it is triggered, how much should the brightness level of the display be limited.

An underwater image projection system submerged in a body of water and projecting an image within said body of water is provided having an enclosure with a lens assembly. A projection element has a light source projecting an image within the body of water from the projection element with an at least one light source steering the image. A system controller is coupled to and controls the projected light source, the projected light source steering device and the further image steering device. A user inputs image data to the controller through the user input device and the controller interprets the image data into a set of image control variables and executes control of the projected light source and image source and further image steering device in coordination and projects the image through the projection element to project from underwater a static or animated image on an underwater surface of the body of water. 1. An underwater image projection system submerged in a body of water and projecting an image within said body of water , comprising:an at least one enclosure;a lens assembly;at least one submerged projection element with an at least one projected light source projecting an image within said body of water from the projection element;at least one light source steering or modulating device;a system controller coupled to and controlling the at least one projected light source, the at least one projected light source steering or modulating device and the at least one light source steering device;a user input device, wherein a user inputs image data to the controller through the user input device and the controller interprets the image data into a set of image control variables and executes control of the at least one projected light source and at least one light source steering device in coordination with each other and projects the image through the projection element with the projected light source by controlling the at least one projected light source steering ...
