The optical disk has a number of spiral or concentric tracks and a number of sectors formed along the circumferential direction of the disk. The sectors are divided into a plurality of sector blocks along the circumferential direction of the disk. Each sector block includes a different number of sectors which are continuous along the circumferential direction and which have a substantially constant linear length. A memory stores at least the speed data for maintaining a constant relative speed between the optical head and optical disk and is determined for each block group having a predetermined number of blocks. Speed data corresponding to the designated sector block is read out from the memory and is supplied to a velocity control circuit. A motor is driven to maintain a constant linear velocity between the optical head and the tracks of the optical disk.

An optical storage medium , which has the DVD format , comprising an entrance face;below the entrance face, a higher recording stack comprising a higher recording layer, the higher recording layer comprising an organic dye material and having a thickness greater than 28 nm and less than 116 nm and a refractive index,below the higher recording stack, at least a lower recording stack, the lower recording stack being recorded or read back by a radiation beam entering the optical storage medium through the entrance face with a wavelength, focused on the lower recording stack and transmitted through the higher recording stack, a recording of the higher recording layer causing a difference in optical thickness between recorded and unrecorded areas of the higher recording layer, which lies within the range of 0.03λ to 0.125λ, wherein λ is the wavelength of the radiation beam which is approximately equal to 655 nm.2. A recordable compact disc comprises a 0.6 millimeter clear plastic or glass substrate on which is grown a thin-film image layer having several distinct recording planes. Each recording plane is separated from the next by a clear plastic layer. Each recording plane includes an organic dye layer in combination with another clear layer that has a different index of refraction. Different color dyes are used for each recording plane. A method for storing and reading data to and from a multilayer recordable compact disc with different color dye layers uses high powered color lasers to write each recording plane and low powered monochromatic reading lasers that are sensitive to the constructive and destructive light interference effects caused by micron variations in the clear plastic layers in each recording plane. The micron variations used for each recording plane are unique and chosen along with the monochromatic reading laser colors to have minimal crosstalk between recording-plane data channels.

The device can be constructed so that the position of either the optical head or the cylindrically-shaped information recording medium relative to the other in the direction parallel to the direction of the rotation axis of the information recording medium is mechanically moved, thereby making it possible to cahnge the information recording zone in the range of movement of the light spot by the light spot moving means to another information recording zone.
