[Class 36] In a glass to metal seal, the metal wire or rod is deformed within the seal by displacing the metal surface at right angles to its length around the complete circumference of the wire. The rod 10, Fig. 2, may have one or more grooves 11 produced by a lateral rolling or swaging, the grooves being wholly contained within the glass wall 12. The grooves may be so close as to produce ribs 14 and on one side of the wall 12, the rod 10 may be reduced to a bendable part 16 springing from a shoulder 15 and rib 17. In a modification, Fig. 4, the rod 10 has flattened parts 18 at right angles, with a central cylindrical part 19.

After welding and upon making the pinch seal (21) of the lamp vessel (20), fracture frequently occurs in the molybdenum foils (22, 23). Molybdenum foils (22, 23) in which yttrium oxide particles are dispersed in a quantity of 1/4-1% of the molybdenum weight, have proved to be considerably stronger than similar thickness molybdenum foils containing no yttrium oxide.

In one method, a series of glass rods 2, Figs. 1 and 2, ate carried on the circumference of a rotating drum 1, and the wires 4 are stretched around part of the circumference so that they bear on the rods 2. The rods are located between projections 3 which serve to limit the depth of penetration of the wires into the rods when the latter are heated by a flame 5 past which they are carried. A series of wires with attached supports is obtained by cutting the wires between the rods or heads 2.

The projection 12 may be wedge-shaped, and is provided on the jaw on that side of the rod to which the foil is attached; a recess 10 may be provided in the opposing jaw to accommodate the thickness of the rod. The glass may be quartz or borosilicate, the rod tungsten and the foil molybdenum and a nickel lead wire may be welded to the other end of the foil.

In one embodiment, distributed feedback lasers well suited for frequency modulation lightwave communication systems are designed to have an integrated feedback element such as a corrugation grating whose effective pitch is selected to cause the Bragg wavelength and, therefore, the laser operating wavelength to be longer than the wavelength at substantially the maximum gain or gain peak in the semiconductor structure without the grating. That is, the wavelength of the grating is effectively detuned toward the longer wavelength and lower energy side of the peak of the gain profile. Such detuning increases the linewidth enhancement factor in such a way that the nonuniform frequency modulation response and its effects are minimized and, in some cases, substantially eliminated.
