The invention relates to a method for capping an electric lamp which has a lamp cap with at least one thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21). In particular, the invention relates to a method for cementless capping of a compact fluorescent lamp. According to the invention, the lamp vessel (1) is sealed with the aid of the thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21) by heating sections (101, 102) of the lamp vessel (1) above the softening point and preferably above the melting point of the thermoplastic, and introducing them into constricted cutouts (210) in the thermoplastic synthetic cap part (21). The heated lamp vessel sections (101, 102) soften or melt and displace the synthetic material in the region of the constricted cutouts (210). The lamp vessel (1) is embedded in the set synthetic in a self-closed fashion after the polymer melt has been allowed to set.

A method and an apparatus for position orienting a base assembly of a metal halide lamp is describe for maintaining the curved arc tube in the upward position when the lamp is inserted in a socket. Once the lamp has been fully assembled and sealed a locator structure is attached to the base shell in order to create a base assembly which will properly position the lamp when it is in the socket. The welding apparatus of the present invention resistance welds the locator structure onto the base shell once the locator structure has been aligned approximately 90 degrees counterclockwise from the tip of the curved portion of the arc tube when viewed from the dome end of the lamp. The lamp resulting from the method and use of the apparatus will be more inexpensive and will not have the problems of a loose base or a cracked seal.

Disclosed is a vacuum packaging method for sealing an upper substrate and a lower substrate by using a laser such that the inside of the flat panel display is in a vacuum state. The disclosed laser vacuum packaging method comprises the steps of forming a first frit layer along an upper edge of a lower substrate, drying and prefiring the first frit layer to remove moisture and binder components in the first frit layer; Forming a second frit layer on the first frit layer and prefiring the same; heating the substrate at a predetermined temperature in a vacuum firing furnace with the upper substrate aligned on the lower substrate; and forming the first and second frit layers. Sealing the upper substrate and the lower substrate by irradiating a laser beam only on the portion to melt at least the second frit layer. Here, the thickness of the first frit layer is thicker than the thickness of the second frit layer, preferably 90% or more of the gap between the upper substrate and the lower substrate. According to the present invention, it is possible to minimize the generation of bubbles in the frit layer to increase the adhesive strength of the upper substrate and the lower substrate and maintain a high vacuum state therein.

The caps 12 are located in each head by their pins engaging shoulders 33, 34, Fig. 5, and the bulbs are supported by cups 17 carried by rods 19 pressed upwards by springs. To allow lateral sliding movement of the cups 17 in all directions, they are secured by a nut 21 engaging a flange 22 to provide a frictional grip thereon. Jaws 35, 36 hold the caps 12 and are operated to release them at the loading and unloading positions by levers 39, Fig. 1, provided with rollers adapted to ride on a fixed cam 37. At the adjusting position B the filament is lighted by the leading- in wires 15, 16, Fig. 10, being seized by grippers 47, 48 connected to the electric supply. The two pairs of jaws are pivoted on a slide, 50 which is rionnally raised out of the path of the bulb. As the slide is lowered by a lever 84, toggles 77, 78 cause the grippers to closed on to the wires. The tube forms a continuous arc path and is provided with electrodes disposed at each end of the arc path. The lamp also comprises a ballast circuit connected to the electrodes by lead-in wires and to a supply voltage by lead-out wires for controlling the current in the tube. A bulb shaped outer envelope has a substantially spherical portion enclosing the tube arrangement and an elongated end portion enclosing the ballast circuit. The end portion of the outer envelope having an open end on a base side is closed and terminated by a closing means of the same material as the outer envelope. The closing means is provided with a tubular opening. The lead-out wires are isolated from each other and led through the tubular opening to a base for connecting said lamp to said supply voltage through a socket. A method for manufacturing a compact fluorescent lamp as described above is also disclosed. In the proposed method, the open end of the elongated portion of the outer envelope is closed and terminated with a closing means comprising a tubular opening for leading through the lead-out wires.

A lamp (24), a series of lamps as well as a method of manufacturing lamps, in particular lamps for automotive headlights, are described. Said lamps (24) comprise a burner (26) for generating light, which burner is held in position in an upper base part (12). Said upper part (12) of the base also comprises reference elements, for example a securing ring (16), for positioning the lamp at a headlight. In addition, a lower base part (14) comprising a connection device for electrical contacts is provided. The lower base (14) part and the upper base part (12) are at least partly made of plastics and are connected together by means of welding or bonding using an adhesive. In a series of lamps, all lamps of said series comprise identical burners (26) and identical upper base parts (12),while different types of lower base parts (14) are available. In the manufacturing process, the burners (26) are first inserted into the upper base part (12) and, preferably, after having been oriented with respect to the reference element (16), fixed in position. Next, lower base parts (14) including the electrical connection device having the desired shape are connected with the upper base parts (12). Further modifications relate to a two-piece embodiment of the lower base part (14), enabling electrical contact elements to be readily accommodated, and to the manufacture of the upper base part and the lower base part from different plastics.
