The present invention provides a connector having a seamless tubular metallic shell which not only provides proper RFI/EMC shielding but also is constructed in such a way as to prevent ingress of moulding material into the spaces between contacts of the connector. This is achieved by forming one end of a seamless tube of ferromagnetic material (which is initially of substantially uniform cross-sectional area) such that it is collapsed on to itself and a cable connected to the connector whereby to tightly seal the send of the tube on to the cable to prevent ingress of moulding material subsequently applied to the exterior of the shell. In the case of a cable providing a braid or foil shielding element, this process simultaneously provides an electrical bond between the shell and a portion of the shielding element of the cable exposed by removing a portion of the outer insulation covering of the cable.

The shield is connected by a shield terminal 23 which has two ends - one 24 to join to the shield and one 25 to bolt to the housing - and a flexible portion 36 in the middle. This flexes when the terminal fixture is bolted to the bus bar, which might otherwise cause a bad connection. The braid 20 may be clamped between a collar 30 and a neck (27, Fig 2) of the shield terminal 23, and sealing members 31, 32 may seal the connection.

To join a terminal 20 to the braid (13) of a cable 10, the cable is placed within U-shaped arms 21 of the terminal. A current is passed between electrodes 30 and 31 which are also used to crimp the arms round the braid. Heat from the current melts the insulation 14 away to allow the terminal to make contact with the braid. A higher current is then passed to weld the terminal to the braid. The arms 21 may be triangular, to meet at an angle to the cable axis, or rectangular (fig 7). The terminal may have pre-applied solder (23, fig 6) to be melted by ultrasonic vibrations. The connection may be made at the end of the cable 10 or at a point along its length (see figures 5A, 5B).

The dielectric may be an epoxy resin polyurethane, or polyethylene, either solid or foamed.

A coaxial cable connector for coupling a coaxial cable to an electrical device includes a body, a threaded fitting, and an alignment mechanism carried and compressed between the body and the fitting so as to exert an axial force against the fitting to maintain electrical contact between the fitting and the body. The body of the connector includes an outer barrel formed with an inner compression band, and a compression collar carried on the outer barrel and formed with an inner compression band. In response to compression of the connector by a compression tool, the inner and outer compression bands deform and move from an uncompressed condition to a compressed condition crimped onto the coaxial cable so as to securely apply the connector to the coaxial cable. 1. A coaxial cable connector comprising:an outer barrel including a longitudinal axis, the outer barrel formed with an inner compression band;a coaxial compression collar applied to the outer barrel, the compression collar including an outer compression band encircling the inner compression band formed in the outer barrel; andthe inner and outer compression bands move between an uncompressed position and a compressed position in response to axial compression of the coaxial cable connector.2. The coaxial cable connector of claim 1 , wherein in the compressed position claim 1 , the outer compression band bears against the inner compression band to deform the inner compression band radially inward toward the longitudinal axis.3. In a method for attaching a connector to a coaxial cable a solder perform is placed upon an end of an outer conductor of the cable. A connector body of the connector is seated upon an interface pedestal and the end of the outer conductor is inserted into a bore of the connector body against the interface pedestal. The back portion of the shell includes a pushing portion pushing the elastic arm to press the connecting portion of the contact. 1. A coaxial cable connector includes an inner barrel having a longitudinal axis, a front end, a rear end, and a compression band between the front and rear ends. A compression collar is mounted to the inner barrel for axial movement over the inner barrel from a retracted position to an advanced position. An inner post of the connector has opposed front and rear ends, and the front end of the inner barrel is carried at and on the rear end of the inner post. In response to axial movement of the compression collar over the inner barrel, the compression band compresses inward. When a cable is applied to the connector and the compression collar is moved axially forward over the inner barrel, the connector is permanently secured to the cable. 1. A coaxial cable connector comprising:an inner barrel having a longitudinal axis, a front end, a rear end, and a compression band between the front and rear ends;a compression collar mounted to the inner barrel for axial movement over the inner barrel from a retracted position to an advanced position;an inner post having a front end and a rear end;the front end of the inner barrel is carried at and on the rear end of the inner post; andin response to axial movement of the compression collar over the inner barrel, the compression band compresses inward.2.
