Mass amounts of information, such as entire libraries of songs or movies, for example, may be stored locally near end-users, and this information may be accessed and reproduced in response to commands received from a transmitting station via a network. When a radio or television station desires to transmit a song or movie, for example, the radio or television station can, rather than transmitting the entire song or movie, merely transmit a command for reproducing the song or movie. An end-user's performance reproduction device, such as an enhanced radio or a television set, then accesses and reproduces the locally stored song or movie. Since the radio or television station need not transmit the entire performance, network traffic can be significantly reduced. The performance reproduction device may actively request information from the radio or television station when fresh or additional information is needed.

A method and apparatus are provided for generating a personalized radio channel playlist by simultaneously buffering tracks from multiple received channels from one or more source streams and selectively playing back tracks from the buffered channels. Navigation tools permit users to skip buffered songs in their playlist (e.g., skip forward and backward). Users can specify favorite channels for building personal playlists, or multiple default playlist channels can be provided (e.g., by genre). Thumbs up/down buttons on the radio receiver permit entering a song or artist being played back into a favorites list that is used to search all channels for matches or a banned list used to block songs from future playlists. A skip function for broadcast or multicast media content is disclosed. In general, a receiving device simultaneously receives two or more content streams transmitted for one or more receiving device and provides a skip function by buffering and switching between the two or more content streams. Initially, the receiving device provides playback of a first content stream of the two or more content streams. During playback of the first content stream, the receiving device buffers one or more most recently received content items from the other content streams. When a skip request is received, the receiving device performs a skip function by switching playback from the first content stream to a second content stream of the two or more content streams beginning at the start of the one or more most recently received content items from the second content stream that have been buffered at the receiving device.

Techniques are disclosed relating to generating and receiving radio frames with multiple portions that have different encoding schemes. An apparatus may include one or more processing elements configured to receive, via a wireless radio, wireless data that includes a plurality of portions that each include multiple orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols. Different ones of the portions have different frequency transform sizes and different sampling rates. The wireless data may also include control data that indicates the frequency transform sizes and sampling rates for the ones of the portions. The apparatus may select, based on the control data and a determined velocity of the apparatus, one or more but not all of the plurality of portions and may decode the selected one or more portions to determine data represented by the OFDM symbols in the selected one or more portions. Different portions of the wireless data may be adapted for decoding by devices moving at different maximum velocities.
