A telephone-line status-detecting unit can determine when the line current is lower or greater than set values. It can also be insensitive to the line cut-off due to dialing a number. A method of operating a switching facility is based on a data base consisting of individual data sets which can be addressed via a key term. The data base is held on a mass store with relatively high access time. To reduce the data access time, a RAM is provided in which the data sets from the data base can be stored. Also provided is a second store area in which a field of pointers to such data sets can be stored, and access occurs in such a way that a field index is derived from the key term. By requesting a pointer to a data set in the first store area, the data set is taken from either the RAM or the mass store. In the latter case, the data set once read out is duplicated in the RAM and an appropriate pointer is entered. For that purpose, a preferably digital and expandable switching system is provided for switching the PCM signals; the said switching system comprises at least one host computer (60), at least one telephone server (70) and a plurality (50) of elementary telephone switching contacts (100, 101...) which are interconnected via a high-speed communications network (80).

A system and method for extracting data, hereinafter referred to as MitoMineTM, that produces a strongly-typed ontology defined collection referencing (and cross referencing) all extracted records. The input to the mining process can be any data source, such as a text file delimited into a set of possibly dissimilar records. Mitomine contains parser routines and post processing functions, known as 'munchers'. The parser routines can be accessed either via a batch mining process or as part of a running server process connected to a live source. Munchers can be registered on a per data-source basis in order to process the records produced, possibly writing them to an external database and/or a set of servers. The present invention also embeds an interpreted ontology based language within a compiler/interpreter (for the source format) such that the statements of the embedded language are executed as a result of the source compiler `recognizing' a given construct within the source and extracting the corresponding source content. In this way, the execution of the statements in the embedded program will occur in a sequence that is dictated wholly by the source content. This system and method therefore make it possible to bulk extract free-form data from such sources as CD-ROMs, the web etc. and have the resultant structured data loaded into an ontology based system.

A trunk interface circuit useful for remotely terminating a two-wire central office trunk at a remote telephone facility includes a current compensated miniature transformer. The transformer includes windings for coupling voice band signals between the trunk and the remote telephone facility and a compensating winding for reducing d.c. flux associated with supervisory d.c. current applied to the trunk at the central office. A circuit connected with first and second portions of a first transformer winding provides signal indication of magnitude and either of two possible directions of current flow in the first winding. A bidirectional current regulation circuit conducts a compensating current in either of two directions in the compensating winding. The compensating current is regulated in accordance with the signal indication from the circuit connected with the first winding to reduce the d.c. flux in the transformer. The signal indication is also used by a supervisory signal detector to couple supervisory information to the remote telephone facility.
